A how to do this would be appreciated - i've got the 2-stage headlamp switch and the fogs, just not the wiring know how!
-
As an auto electrician I woulnt reccomend a complete novice to do this but anyway take a live feed from the dip beam either at the headlight or under the dash (reccomended) to the fog light switch then to relay, other side of relay to earth (look at relay wiring diagram). Ignition feed to relay preferably from a spare fuse in the fusebox and other side to fog lamps, other side of fog light bulb to earth. Repeat if you are not confident leave it to the profesionals as you could cause a fire plus we need to earn a crust too.
-
we need to earn a crust
lol
-
As in bread.
-
lol cool man, i'm okay with electrics, just need to know where to etc...
you mentioning the relay wiring digram, where might I find this?
Thanks!
-
Should be actually on the relay a little coil of wire is the activator the fog switch one side the other to earth. and a pair of contacts one to live feed at fuse box other to fog lamps. Hope that helps.

Could just go to a scrapyard, find a headlight loom for a Mk3 with fogs, and swap it with yours.
It will be the whole loom that connects into the round connector block attatched to the slam panel.
There will be 2x plugs for the headlights, 2x plugs for the indicators, 2x plugs for the fog lights, and also plugs for the horn
Or is that too easy

Was going to say this, and agree. And wont cost you sod all. And be plug and play.
-
cheers gguys, i'm liking the plug and play option - hadn't realised it was a seperate loom!
-
did this on my tdi :) got the loom and fitted that ! sorted :)! big improvement. routing the wires was a sod in places tho!

I guess that's something i'm just gonna have to deal with! :)

dude, why make life hard for yourself??? find a gti in the scrap yard and nick the headlight loom if it had fogs, shimples! will only cost you like 5 quid and will make you live longer, you wont be as stressed with the wiring that way
-
I intend to get the loom!
-
when you get the loom its plug and play...unplug the horns + indicators + headlings from old loom...throw it in the bin...wire in new loom to HL's, ind's, horns and fogs, plug ind's and fogs back into place, job done :)
-
sorry to anyone if i'd missed it earlier in the thread but, thanks grimbo, i wanted to know what the loom is connected to and did you this.. (too much star wars..) so cheers buddy!!
:)
-
no worries :)
its like a 15 minute job if you do it nice and tidy or 10 minutes if you quickely bung everythinng in  could take longer if you get a loom that is hacked :( but i got my loom for free so im not complaining if i have to do abit of wiring, only have to reconnect the horns + indi's on one side so not all that bad :nerd:
-
so let me get ths correct, fit a loom from a gti with fogs, change the switch over in dash, and it will work yea?

Yep.

+1
-
this job is sooo easy my cat could do it
get said loom from brerakers/egay
and then just replace it for the loom thats in your car already, its the big connector on the top of your rad you need to un do, it has the connections for your horn/indicaters etc on it, the new loom with have the extra ones on it for the fogs
should take no more than half hour to do
-
It wont cost you any more than a ticket for using fogs when not needed ;)
-
he is right hahaha
-
I did this on mine, got the light switch (with fog part) and the front wiring loom, fitted straight together and all worked. I did notice that in one of the relay slots of the fusebox I had two pieces of metal, this acted like a crossover I believe. (This was already there...)

And Mike maybe the one giving you the ticket!
Whichever way you go its a lot of work for something you cant legally use that much!

I've got the piece of metal in empty relay slot no10 does this mean i dont need a 53 relay when i fit my loom?
-
I should have a spare headlight loom and switch with front fogs in a few days time...
-
take the metal bit out and fit the relay
