Hi all,
Just joined your site. I had a Mk2 GTI ages ago it was a D reg and it was a minter. Got married had a kid and loads of sh!t cars. Just got back from France with a Clio well old. And we are now looking for a new car and guess what i want a Golf GTI or even a nice old normal Golf! I have been looking at spending about £1500-£2000 not much i know but France was very draining on the cash. Well thats me in a very short story. Now i want to be able to drive with my head high on the English roads with a classic VW Golf!
Questions;
When should the cam belt be changed,
Is any year of Golf better than others,
Is high mileage a big problem,
Should i buy from Ebay or a garage!
Very kind regards to you all,
Hilly.

When should the cam belt be changed,
As soon as you buy any car off a stranger.
Is any year of Golf better than others,
It goes without saying but the MK3 and MK6 are the uncool ones.
Is high mileage a big problem,
Not really, they go strong even at 250k
Should i buy from Ebay or a garage!
Shouldn't matter, go have a decent look at it.

Nice one brother. So the MK4 and MK5 are the ones to go for. And how much would you expect to pay for a new cam belt.
Thanks for that

Cam belts are buttons - if you DIY, then about 20mins on a MK1/MK2 - no idea for later spec.

Where you been in france?
If it all goes tts up here im off to Avignon, free house

Hi,
We was in lower Normandy, St Sever it was well nice, the largest town near to us was Vire, all we had close to us was farms and fields. I was building for six month but the global down turn forced us back. And look at what we have come back to!
Regards
Chris

nothing wrong with a mk3! and a mk6 doesn't come under age between 1996-2000 and a price tag of 1500 - 2000
miles ont matter too much eitheras long as its got the history to back it up.

if you've never done a cam change will take longer then 20mins. . . easy enough tho.

welcome to the site

welcome m8

The Mk4 is the worst of the lot unless you want a diesel and remap it! But for the year and money you state, you are looking at a decent Mk3.

Hi,
Got the years all wrong looking at getting a MK 2 really 1986-1990. Had one years ago and want another now.
-
Welcome! For that price, maybe look into a VR6. Far better than any mk4 you'll get for 1500 pounds imho.
EDIT:
Just read your most recent post.
Well done! MK2 FTW!
You can get a decent 16V for that price! Have a look on pistonheads, some nice ones on there atm.

Hi,
Been looking today on pistonheads seen a white MK 2 down in Devon looks mint! I had a D reg VW GTI years ago and really want another. Not long got back from France and need a car. I'm 36 years old now and i still have a soft spot for the MK2. Just want to get one that is ok and i dont need to spend loads of cash on it.

whats with all the mk4 bashing

Not bashing them at all. Think its the old man in me want to go back to my teen years so its got to be a MK2 for me.
Regards,
Chris.

I'm not mk4 bashing. Although they are my least favorite golf.. I still love 'em! Golfs FTW!

That's what I was thinking, usually Golf bashing is reserved for the MK3
