Hey guys and girls
Im still waiting patiently for my GTI to arrive but was trying to decide about getting super guard or not. Does anyone know what it really does? Also since my GTI will be in white does it mean tar is easier to remove? Also does anyone know how to get tar off as i seem to have lots of little specs on my red GT TDI and since it shows on there i don't want my new white one to look a mess!
-
Tar remover
ghetto fix thats really good cheap for removing tar is WD40. I sh!t you not...
-
if you can afford it, then definitely get the superguard - 100%. i have it on my mk 5 gti and after 2 and a half years and 35000 miles i don't have a scratch on the bodywork (the dealer couldn't believe it when i had it valued when i ordered my mk6!) - so yes, its defo worth it and in my opinion would be the first option i would add when ordering a car. hope that helps!
-
How much is supergard ?
-
Dont get supaguard! Its a huge con (confirmed by people i know that work in dealers)
A good wash, polish and wax is a billion times more effective!
For anyone who stumped up the money i advise you not to click this link

I (and every other detailer in the world) can assure you its crap
-
i'm only telling you my experience - every other car i have had got stone chips etc on the bodywork. my mk5 had superguard, not a scratch on it. now unless stones don't like red cars after 35,000 miles then i would imagine the superguard works! :-)
-
i can't remember how much it cost, but i had it chucked in for free with my new car so that link doesn't upset me in the slightest!
-
lol will just be good paint, my 32000 mile R32 hardly has any stone chips either mate
The interior stuff is good but the exterior stuff is no better than any sealant. In fact probably worse as its an old product, something like Jetseal 109 sealant or collonite will spank it for shine, beading, longevity and cost!
Feel free to search on detailingworld, there several threads with the proffesionals stateing it does work, but not for long and not worth the cost.
I have detailed a few cars and can tell you first hand you will not see much more than 6-8 months from any product
(check my thread if you dont think i know what im talking about)

I do have it on here but that thread is updated with pics

i believe you, i'm just saying from my own personal experiance of quite a few cars that it worked for me. plus it has a 10 year guarantee!
-
I would listen to Jules on this one, this is one topic he knows his stuff on.
-
like i say, i believe him, but i still think its worth it! especially for free!

Placebo effect? :)
-
excuse my ignorance but what does that mean lol?!
-
In this case, because you've had something done that you expect to have an effect, you interpret subsequent events to reinforce your belief that an effect has occurred.
Like believing you've got better even though the pills the doctor gave you were only sugar.

oh i see lol!! well ignorance is bliss i suppose, i still think its made a difference but as someone has said others are far more knowledgeable than me!!
-
I read the thread that Jules offered in his previous post... Man what? I think I will be fit as a fiddle after doing all that. Of course the car will look splendid but I might take a few days to recover from all the effort! I must congratulate Jules for his excellent guide with pictures! And I daresay it will allow anybody to follow the steps in restoring your car to showroom shine...
Just a quick question, when doing the waxing or even washing, why is it that you are not supposed to do it under direct sunlight?

Oops, never though of that!! Thats what you get for living in the sticks and never having the chance for a trip to Halfords or the likes.
Think this answers my questions and im going to save some dosh and not get superguard as i clean the car 1 or 2 times a week anyway and was concerned about the tar showing up on the white.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Cheers, Rolfe :)

JulesV6, excellent thread. You must know your stuff.
If you were to put a pack together of cleaning products what would they be? Also is Autoglym Lifeshine just as bad as Supagaurd???

Hi, since we are talking about protection of paintwork, I was just browsing the German VW website and found this V-Protector. Is it any good? Looks like a screen protector that one applies on handphones but for car hoods. But since I dont speak German I am not actually sure what it actually does. Anybody can shed light on this? Thanking you in advance...

Linky?
Rolfe.

supaguard "technicians" left my paint with lots of swirls and holograms.. and if you drive it every day it wont last more than 6 months anyway.

Even if you pay for Supaguard/Lifeshine then it probably won't be applied with much care in my experience, plus the margin is huge on it. I know they give you a 'Guarantee' but I don't know anyone who has actually claimed on it.
The best thing to do in my opinion is to buy a bottle of Chemical Guys Jetseal 109 and some good quality wax. Once you get the car home, give it 2 coats of the Jetseal, then 2 coats of wax (something like collinite). Do the wheels as well. Top up the wax every 3 - 6 months. Job done.
If you really must have the lifeshine then buy a kit off ebay for about £25 and apply it yourself. At least then you know it's been done correctly.

Speeds up the bonding process among other things which causes it to literally bake onto the paint!!

Niether are 'bad' they just dont last as long as you would expect. As mentioned earlier as well the people that apply it are not detailers and dont car about your paint so you can expect swirls. Therefore having it for free is still not worth it.....would you let someone wash your car with a gritty sponge for free?
A good starter pack would be
1. Megs detailer spray and clay bar
2. A good shampoo, something like chemical guys maxi suds
3. two buckets and a wash mitt
4. Some microfibres and Drying Towel
5. A good polish, glaze and wax (a sealant if you have a bit left over)
If it were me buying i would get this
1. http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/detailing-clay/meguiars-quik-clay-kit-50g-clay-/prod_226.html
2. http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/washing-and-drying/chemical-guys-maxi-suds-ii/prod_165.html
3. http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/washing-and-drying/sonus-sheepskin-wash-mitt/prod_32.html

5. http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing/polish/sonus-hand-polish-bundle/prod_29.html
(glaze is color dependant so which ever fits your color best, some glazes will stop sealants from bonding)

Some of those are expensive but will last about 2 years if used correctly (i have lots of jetseal left after two years of use!) The only thing that will run out quickly is the shampoo and detailer spray.
I have not put any interior bit, tyre bits etc etc as i could go on all day lol I have several links within the thread i linked tho
-
Cheers for the advice JulesV6.
-
my mates saab came new from the garage supaguarded' and im not a great detailer or anything but oh dear the swirls on the bodywork was as if someone had put polish on a brillo pad and worked it all round the car!
as Toph said aswell doesnt usually last very long either, another dealer con im afraid!
-
Dealer I spoke to today didn't even try to sell it to me. Turned out he was on the fleet side but he reckoned that it wasn't worth it.
-
jetseal 109 is defo the way forward

A very popular tar remover on Detailing World, (and the best I have found) is Autosmart Tardis  :

Would deffo be on my shopping list with a white car
