I will be eventually looking to buy a simple system for a mk2 gti.
I don't want too much bass just enough to keep the music intresting [no subs] and I would like the music to stay concistant throughout low to high volume with little loss of clarity.
Idealy I don't wan't an amp either and I need a head unit that can easily attach to an iphone.
Any ideas on the best kind of system that will meet these reqs that will easily work with the mk2?
I would usually search the entire audio section for answers but this is a little bit more specific than most of the questions going out there.

You would do much better with a Amp system if you could persuade yourself...
However if you really do not want, save yourself some money and do what I did for a while, decent head unit with Ipod connection (I still use now) Alpine 104bti, got bluetooth and full iphone connectivity, lots of space for upgrading in the future as well if you can be tempted to try an amp then hook up some decent Crossovers.
They involve a mid/bass speaker for the door (larger) and a smaller tweater for the dash usually both connected to a crossover box which seperates the higher frequencies to the tweeters and the rest to the mid speaker.
Alpine HU - £180
Decent Crossovers (there are loads) - £100-£200
This can all be wired to the headunit and will sound good for now but will sound MUCH MUCH better powered by an amp as I have found out recently...

Tbh without a sub your only going to get down to around 50-60Hz so missing out on the lower frequencies.
£500.
£100 second hand v. Good hu
£150 sub & amp package
£200 front comps & amp
£50 cables & such
JBL are always a good budget bet.
75.2 amp for the front. Probably bout £90
I got jbl p6550c comps for £45. would run lovely off the above amp.
gt4 sub maybe £30-50.
Loads of mono amps between 300-600wrms again the sub will love this.
4awg wiring £40
descent box build youself or get built £40.
loads to choose from hu wise alpine/pioneer/kenwood/clarion.

Do you mean component speakers?
