Title: Exhaust - stay stock or go for a change?

My 8v is basically stock, with almost 100% of it being vag parts and nothing aftermarket.
However the mid-section silencer and  backbox both now need replacing.

VW do still supply the exhausts but those two parts are about £170 combined (plus £15 for the hanging rubbers etc).

Depends what you're after. The standard system flows extrememly well and aftermarket systems gain you very little other than a sport note to the exhaust and shiny tail pipes.

I had the exact same problem as you when i bought my car, i went for the jetex in the end and to be honest i regret it has taken so long for it fit right and it still isnt perfect! But saying that many people on here have bought them and dont have troubles. Also my front silencer that conects to the downpipe sounds very very tinny especially when cold. The exhaust does sound good when opended up but to be honest i wish i had stuck with standard or went custom.

You're pretty lucky as the mid box and back box are the only parts of the exhaust that VAG still have in stock, and according to my local dealer, there aren't many of those left.

Standard all the way for me, but it really depends whether you want a roar or a purr. The VAG system is supposedly pretty durable too. Don't forget that a stainless system will add extra weight to the car too, for relatively little performance gain.

I'm going for a twin 2.5" system, thought I may as well. The website convinced me with the GUARANTEED 10-12% performance gain  :rolleyes: lol

I went with jetex and although I like it, I would probably go with another "top brand" the next time round like milltek or supersprint. The jetex is...

1)  As heavy as the VW system, which is bloody heavy.
2)  Built well, with reinforced welds.
3)  Fits okay on mine.
4)  Looks great. I don't like the original Mk2 diagonal pipes.


The weight is the killer.

my milltek was sooooo noisy on my 2.0 8v. had a big valve head, cam etc. so i got an original full vw system.
car would not pull in the higher revs at all. it lost alot of pull.
have a jetex now. the 2" version and its perfect

Well the exhaust sits and fits perfectly now after cutting and shutting the hangers. But now the rear box internal baffles have let go and resonate like a b@stard. So I have a choice. Buy a new back box and modify it, thus saying cheerio to the warranty, or have mine cut open and repaired, which takes me off the road for a few days. :undecided:
