What are the main differences?
-
Drivetrain, suspension, interior, body shape, size. The mk4 was alot more modern when it came to refinement. If a little flimsy in places.
-
why do you want to compare them? what are you after?
-
just depends on which modle you like more like i prefer the mk3 and mk2 i think the mk4 is the worst modle made the latest one is nice , anything between the mk3 and the last modle i would not buy. the mk4 just dont look like a gti should if you know what i mean the suspension seem to high
-
Less rust issues, heaver
-
Well my budget is about £1500 which is right in between, I could get a mk3 or one of the first mk4s.

Genuinely, the only MK4 I like is the R32 :)
-
For £1500 you can get a good 16v or vr6 Mk3 or a lame 2.0 (or maybe a miler 1.8 N/A)..Mk4 and I doubt turbo's will be in your price range? I would go for the mk3 myself
-
If I had that sorta money I'd be buying a Mk4!!
Mk3's have had their day.
-
Unless your getting a TDI or 1.8T mk4 I would go for a mk3

its spelt model mate.
go for a mk3 there a lot cheaper then a mk4 and seem ot have a hell of a lot less problems

Funny most mk2 owners say the same thing about mk3s but having driven a mk2 and cant deny the fun factor for your day off, but for every day driving and as a compromise between power, fun factor, long disdtance driving comfort especially on our speed restricted roads I am quite happy to stick with my mk3 gti. Never driven a mk4.
-
my brother has the 2.8 four motion in green. I have driven it and it is pretty quick, but not as quick as i was expecting. I found the handling sloppy compared with my mark 3 and im on standard springs. Its looks seriously let it down i think. Looks too ordinary, like my grannys car.

£1500 wont get you a good one though.
And since we are now on the MK6 the same could be said about the MK4.
-
^^As above, £1500 is not going to get you much of as mk4.
-
A decent Mk3 and have some change left over for tarting up!
-
Mk4 is either TDI or R32. Not even to sure on the 1.8t tbh.
And the mk4 doesnt have much improvments on the mk3? All of the same refinements in each, just different look slightly.
Up to what you like the look off really.
-
Most satndard Mk 4s look exactly the same. You could have a TDi150 or a 1.4 Match and without badges they look absolutely identical. There is no individuality with a Mk 4 until you start modding it!
-
Out of MK3/MK4? MK3 EVERY TIME! For £1500 get a decent VR6, you'll have loads of fun!
In my opinion, the MK4 was the biggest mistake in VW's golf history. Fat, slow and bland... Except the R32

Its the wood that does it

i think for £1500 u will be able to get a decent vr6, but what mk4 will u be able to get???
the only mk4 i would go for is the anniversary or r32. like people have said they all look the same gti or non-gti.
-
id say depends on what you have now ? if you have had MK3's Before then go for a MK4 for a change.
If you have never had either then i say go for a MK3 :)
-
had a mk4 turbo before my mk3 16 valve mk4 was a good car but
became a money pit for modding it  mk3 a nicer car to
drive as standerd and the trim inside doesent rattle as much
as the mk4
-
mk1, mk2, mk3, or mk4 all great cars because there vw's so what ever your choice mate its the rite one! but as said for a decent mk4 you will need a tad more dollar. but £1500 should defo get you a decent mk3.
