Title: getting harder to get 5th gear??
Post by: deanpompey on 11 July 2009, 18:46
hey all, right just lately my mk2 has been getting more and more difficult to put into 5th gear. as of today, i have to really slam it across and up to get 5th. it stays in gear once selected and have no other problems with it. what you reckon? gear selector bushes etc?

Get yourself a new bush kit from GSF, should take no longer than a couple of hours to replace the lot, 5th gear starting to get harder to find is one of the well known symptoms to this problem..

cool should be another fun afternoon

may have a much bigger problem though, just done a 300mile round trip and noticed squeaking when i turn wheel. got out of car and front looks like it may have dropped about 25mm too....love the look, but somethings obviously not right...

anyone any ideas?

there is a 5th gear selector rod in your linkage, probably this that is gone. might as well replace the whole lot whilst you're at it though.

as for the drop, this happened to me when one of my shocks went. have you noticed the front bouncing more than usual?

im sure i have read that 5th starts to go first when the oil needs topping up

ill check the gearbox oil first then. although that should be fine as it had new clutch 2months ago and all fluids were topped up then. may have cracked the casing or something though as have caught the front end on lumps and bumps in country lanes etc recently.
have also noticed that the plastic cup type thing that holds the ball at bottom of gearstick has a crack in it at the top, so probs replace that while im at it.

i was wrong about the front dropping though, everything is absolutely fine there! its a long story and slightly embarrassing so lets just leave it at that! lol

cheers for info guys :)

this can be due to the short plastic rod having a crack at one end. the crack opens up when you try to select 5th so it doesnt pull the rod far enough out to reach 5th. in this situation all other gears are ok as the rod pushes in to select these
