Post by: omex_uk on 10 July 2009, 13:38
i just brought a gti with 83k on the clock. no history other then a few mot's so i decided im going to give it a full server after hours at my mates garage.

im going to change;

¬sparks
¬water pump
¬gear box and engine oil
¬cam belt
¬fan belt
¬cam (buying a piper uprated one)
¬valves

and im going to get the head pressure tested and skimmed

what i want to know is there anything im missing out ? anything that are notorious for giving problems on mk3s that arnt on the list?

cheers lads

Also check to see the condition of the crank sensor while its on a ramp ... mine was knackered (the wire was split etc and covered in oil from an engine leak) and caused my car to keep cutting out. After numerous suggestions from friends & people on the forum, and £1000 later ... (changed EVERYTHING, including purchasing new ECU and Resetting at VW etc) I then changed the crank sensor and it solved the problem.
