Seriously? It's a massively popular engine conversion!

Like i say, i may be wrong, but i don't think there are many people on here that have carried out the conversion themselves

the 1.8T is a fairly easy swap,  it's bolt up apart from pipework and wires and most of that can be bought off the shelf now anyway.

done a couple for others but, i find the engine feels lame till it's tuned to a point the insurance man dosent find amuseing.

The way they're selling at the moment.. you might be better off buying an already completed 20vT mk2. You can get them for around 4k and assuming you aren't going to do ALL the work yourself you'll struggle to build one for less than that.

toph is right :) From the research I've done into them, 4k will get you a properly done conversion on a nice tidy car.

Well it depends what donor you go for and how spanner handy you are, don't whatever you do buy an Audi longitudinal engine and try and fit it into a mk2 as it is a royal pain in the batty,   :lipsrsealed:
A BAM or AGU etc is pretty straightforward to do main headaches are converting to a hydraulic clutch, getting the boost pipes run and wiring it in, you can go the qpenq route if you have the money to throw at it but altogether so far I have spent less than £700 doing mine it's been a ballache and the donor car was the wrong one but in effect I got my engine for free and have done everything myself work wise. All the bits and pieces I needed I have bought from classifieds or made, I could have spent a couple of grand and it would be somewhere near done by now.
I lost hope with it a bit but am about to go round to my garage and blitz it :)

I did my 20v mk2 for just over 3k and that included the 1k for the Qpeng kit.

Conversion is not as hard as people make out found mine quite simple to do in the end. Main problem i had was waiting for parts as made all the intercooler pipes etc from universal parts.

Pics of what mine looked like for a home job.

If i had all the parts needed for the conversion i could easy do it in 2 weekends.

Fiddly bits now, got to get the ECU connected back up when it returns and then map it, sort the gear linkage out, sort an oil leak on the sump out fill it with oil and water and fire it up :) Looking at moving the boost hoses around a bit to neaten it up and thats about it conversion wise.
Then might be taking it apart again next winter for some power improvements ;)

If you really do want to do it cheaper than paying a garage/specialist, I'm sure DH and Danny_P could give you a hand as you're in their area. Just make sure you don't get a GPeng kit, it doesn't use a knock sensor

Most aftermarket kits don't use a knock sensor to be fair Jay, you can add them to ~Megasquirt but I don't think I found 1 aftermarket within a reasonable price that did knock sensing :) My beef with Qpeng is you have to pay extra to get a kit to allow you to plug your laptop into it. I was looking at Emerald which is a reasonable price and seems to have a good reputation and base maps available. I went Megasquirt in the end after talking to Danny P on the old MSN :)

IMO the best ecu for most people to use on the 20vt is the OE ecu  if that option is avalible.  you don't need clocks or keys just to have the ecu cracked whitch isn't that dear and the rest is pritty straight forward.

I have a lot of time for megasquirt, aviod the fake ms from Mtec and got for the B&G one MS2 is massively flexible and is one of the best value ecu's out there in terms of what it can do v's cost,   there are a few cheeper ecu's about ( have a sout african thing here thats on the market for less than £130 ) but they are very inflexible and slow and not much use for anything other than old donkey v8's
