Title: USB coonector for MK5 golf
Post by: bobotheclown on 09 July 2009, 22:54
USB connector for MK5 golf. Anyone know if this can be retro fitted easily?

Saw one in the arm rest of the Mk6 GTi the other day and thought it was a brilliant idea.

Yeah but I think there's some difficulty as you have to get the wiring all the way from the stereo down to the gear knob.

An easier way might be just to have the USB cable running through into the glove box so you can just plug it in and leave it.

If you can find one then it can be retro fitted exactly like the arm rest ipod.

A word of warning, it will only work satisfactorily with memory sticks and VW have stopped selling them a couple of years ago.

I'll see if I can find it. In the meantime have a look at this connector

The USB connectors are part of the MDI kit that only work on the newer head units ending in 10.

If you get an RNS510 sat nav you can get that kit, but its pricey.

I don't think he is refering to that!

Previously VW offered either an ipod or usb connector option for the central arm rest.
Apparently because so many complained about the usb connection not working with their mp3 players, VW stopped selling them. The connection was really only meant for an usb stick and not a mp3 player.
