It's impossible to work out delivery times on these Mark 6s but nevertheless my dealer rang me yesterday to tell me mine has arrived and I take delivery next Saturday. I was originally expecting to get it on September 1st so it's only taken 6 weeks from ordering to arriving (I ordered it on May 25th). It is a carbon grey metallic with 18s, convenience pack and cruise. That's it so maybe 'cos it's a fairly simple spec it gets built quicker.
Anyway, the dealer has sent me pics from the compound it's stood in and I will post these as soon as I've read the section on how to do it - thought I would as I don't recall anyone having posted this colour yet.
I have to say I've nearly wet myself with excitement and it is STUNNING.

Going to be a popular color!

Very nice mate, lovely color!!
-
Very nice
-
Nice nice motor me likeee, smart colour too!
-
do those hearts come as factory fit options?!
-
Beautiful! 3dr with rear tints makes me sick in my pants!
-
i like the bar code detailing on the wheels
-
Nice to see another set of pix of the colour I've ordered. Is it my screen, or does the second car look very slightly green?
-
If you look carefully, there are a lot of trees close by. I think we're seeing a green tinge from the foliage reflected in the high polish on the car.
Very, very pretty.
(But it's still a grey car. Want colour! Why so few options?)
Rolfe.
-
To be fair I don't know where the dealer's compound is but it is central Doncaster so it's all a bit grey and industrial around. I assume the car hasn't been finally prepped either so I'm hoping it'll be more like the first one when I pick it up next Saturday.
God, that's seven days away - I bet they're the slowest seven days in history!!!
-
By the way the hearts were standard. It shows I'm in love!!!!
-
Why do so many of you who have gone for red or white diss the black? It is a matter of personal choice and I think it is a class colour for such a good looking car.
I did think of red but then a mate told me that they are the worst colour to try and sell on later.
But no offence to anyone, we all love the colour of car we have chosen and wouldn't it be a rotten old world if we all liked the same thing. So each to his or her own. lol
-
isnt that STEEL grey? and carbon grey is slightly lighter?
-
Ide tell em to f***off, 401 miles on delivery?
-
P:S Im also from Doncaster, Might see you about ill be sure to give u a wave, Look out for a White one same as yours come september, Still dont see how you've got yours so much b4 mine but anyway. Hayselden I take it?

Steel grey is the lighter shade. My mk5 is steel grey and it's not at all a dark grey. The mk6 Steel Grey does look slightly darker than my mk5 in the flesh though, as I was looking over one in my local dealer on Thursday.
Carbon Grey is very dark, similar to Atlas Grey on mk2s if you're old enough to remember that far back (I am!). Both nice shades if you like grey like I do (yes, I'm boring).
I have a hunch that VW will introduce more shades a year or two down the line. As right hand drive cars are built in batches because the machines have to be changed arount to make them economies of scale probably factor in. Hence they charge a silly premium for the fancy colours on left hookers as they are then painted in very small batches and you pay for the privilige of that, thus adding in right hand drivers too would mean even smaller batches and even more £££££, thus VW UK wouldn't entertain it. Just a hunch anyway. :undecided:
-
Yes jdjd it is from Haysleden in Donny. I said in the original post I can't work out delivery times. Iwas expecting 10-12 weeks which means it would come in mid August which is why I would have taken it on the 1st September. The salesman was as surprised as me when it turned up last Wednesday after just 6 weeks and 2 days!!!! As I said, perhaps it's because it's a simple spec without the big ticket items like leather. A sunroof is also going to delay them as so few are ordered with one.
Anyway, I'm not complaining - just roll on next Saturday
-
The first dealer I spoke to said "three months irrespective of the options selected."
The second said "maybe September" even though he knew I'd specified a sunroof.
Better just wait and see what happens, I reckon.
Rolfe.

Is it the sunroof that slows things down then? Maybe that's why I've had to wait 3.5 months :(
-
It can't be down to the sunroof cos I ordered 23rd May and it has now been built in build week 28 and is due for immediate shipment that is with quite a large spec and a sunroof. Therefore I don't know how some are getting them early and some aren't, could be down to geography ie where your dealer is based or something strange like that!! who knows.
-
There's a guy on another motoring forum I read who's had to wait years seemingly for his Mark 6 1.4 TSi. That has a sunroof and has been told that's what has delayed it.
However, I think it must be just luck (either good or bad)as there doesn't seem to ba a pattern to it at all.

mk6 i test drove was supposed to be DPB, but it looked strangely light. turned out it was carbon grey! happy to report its not greeny or bluey at all. perhaps its all down to the light conditions/ camera?

sorry but what's "reup"?
the carbon grey was really really nice looking. originally i was set on black, but this has really thrown me a curve ball.
-
I think FroGTI meant, could you repost/upload ur picture since I too cant see it. There is just a blank square. Cheers, HM
-
is it working now?

Yes, thanks - I think I have ordered the right colour :) Reup is short for re-upload in forum speak, sorry.
-
oh and bizarrely this car i drove was so new, they hadn't even removed the suspension blocks that are put on for delivery. as a result the ride was very firm! also means that this car is an inch or so "higher" than otherwise.
-
Now you mention it, it does look a bit high. I'm surprised they let you drive it with the blocks still in place - not good for the suspension at all. Funny how UK dealers open all the boot lids on their forecourt cars :D
-
I expect to take delivery of a M6 GTi (my first VW so minimal prior knowledge of this car) by early/mid Sept. I would be interested in your views/experience of tyres for the Monza 18's, especially as other sites suggest problems with dunlop or Continental Sports contact 2's.
Also I would welcome any pointers to sites that specify which phones will pair with the VW bluetooth rSAP technology and/or alternative software that can be dealer/self installed that will work with the RCD510.
-
The GTIs I've looked at all had Continental Sport Contact 3s on. An excellent tyre.
I've got a pair of 2s and a pair of 3s and they are all hardwearing and seem fine in the wet and dry.
-
Got Dunlops on mine, they feel fine even though they don't seem to have many fans.
A dealer left the transport chocks in a demo car? FFS, they are tw@ts aren't they?
-
Tks to the members who have already commented on tyres which was prompted partly by my test drive last week. The test car I drove was also just off the transporter; turned out the harder than expected ride was partly because the transport chocks hadn't been removed. Dealer advised they won't remove until the car is PDI'd prior to on sale!
-
What? The dealer is talking out of his a$$, the can't be put on for demo without a PDI???
Find another dealer mate, that one is a knob!
-
I've got contact 2's on my car at present and I rate them really highly, they are brill in the wet and dry. When I take delivery of my GTI next week they have contact 3's so I guess they'll be ok too.

Thats Morden VW where i live grin:
-
Anyone got pictures of the transport chocks? Am curious why the dealers are not taking them out before delivering the car. See if there are pictures, one could claim damages if the dealership did not take them out and you drove off with them... I wonder legally who would be liable. The ignorant buyer or the all knowledgeable dealership...?
HM
-
the dealer said that it was so new, they didn't have a chance to take them off. they're yellow plastic things on the shocks.
-
Having had poor experience of VW dealers in the past with my Mark 4s you've made me aparanoid now for when I get my GTi Mk 6 on Saturday. Can one see these yellow plastic things if you look at the springs under the wheel arches? How do you spot if they're still on or not?
-
yeah, just have a look in the wheel arch, you should be able to spot it easily
the dealer showed me!!
-
Having been to the dealer's tonight to sort out the paperwork before I pick the car up on Saturday I managed to get into the compound to see it in the flesh. It's not fully prepped yet but it is so achingly gorgeous that I'm not sure I can cope with another 60 hour wait!!!!
-
I have seen my car... and there is a scratch on the left rear bumper... Dealer said they will have it fixed... sob sob sob oh, the paaaain!

no way!! they better fix it completely.... i feel for you man!

Well I took delivery of the car yesterday and have only done 50 miles in it so far. However, first impressions are all positive. It looks stunning in the carbon grey and friends and family who've seen it all agree with that. The handover was smooth (nice to have found a competent VW dealer!!). The car is solid - no rattles at all and is an absolute hoot to drive. Quick, handles well and rides well despite the 18s and it even copes admirably with the speed bumps where I live.
Without question it is already the best car I've ever owned to drive - let's just hope it lives up to my expectations and proves relaible too.
Is it better than the Type R and VXR I nearly bought? Undeniably. It's maybe not quite as quick as the VXR but is definitely a better all round car. The Type R feels positively tinny (in terms of quality) and weedy (in terms of power) than the Golf.
Is the Golf £5k better than those two£ No. However, I'm sure the resale will make it worth the effort of saving up and paying the extra.
The cachet of the Golf is worth it too. It's had so many admiring glances in the day I've had it I can't believe. Even when I was sat in it at the dealer' as the salesman showed me round it some other customers were all over it like a rash.
So all in all I am very satisfied with it and am looking forward to getting to grips with it in the next few weeks.
-
Have you resisted the urge to boot it to see how good the performance is?
P.s nice colour by the way,i ordered black pearl but i have a car in that colour as my wallpaper, could not find a picture of a black gti at the time and carbon looked pretty good.

A repair job, on a brand new car ???? Erm, I'd be telling them to keep it.
-
After waiting so long ?,may be asking for money off :undecided:
-

I'd be asking to keep that car and use it till my replacement arrived. Fat chance probably, but I'd certainly not be accepting no repair job thats for sure.
-
It's not at all unusual for new cars to arrive with small marks or dents in them unfortunately. You may get very lucky and the stealer will swap the car with another and put the damaged one on to their fleet but more often than not you have to put up with the repair. They will just use one of these mobile people that do smart repairs if the scratch is very minor. Just make sure you are 100% happy with the repair before signing on the dotted line. At least you saw your scratch before taking delivery, very few people do and the rest are completely unaware their car has ever been damaged.

No-one needs to be lucky to get the dealer to swap the car at all. No-one pays money for dents or marks on their car. If anyone gets a car that is dented or scratched please don't listen to this advice. Get your dealer to swap it out or you simply won't accept it. You're in control and its up to you what you accept, certainly not the dealer regardless it they repair it and no-one has to 'put up with a repair' at all. Honestly I have not read as much tosh in a long time.

Just trying my new avatar (keep it cool kev )
-
Not booted it properly yet. Had a few pops at it in first and second and it sounds fantastic. But may give it a few relatively gentle hundred miles before I reall screw it.
-
Yes i`ll do the same, but it will be so difficult to resist, what sort of miles will you do to run in ?

It wasn't advice, it was based on what I know dealers do! By all means reject a car that you've already been waiting however many months for and will have to wait however many more months to get again. We're not talking base model Polos here, GTIs are in short supply in some specs and if you want a complete car swap for a small scratch then you could be in for a very long wait again.
However if you are leasing (hiring) or ordering from a broker it's very unlikely you'll ever know it's been damaged as you won't have seen the car in the dealer's pound prior to PDI generally. If you are already using your local dealer for a conventional purchase you may be lucky enough to see the car before delivery, but I'll bet if they know it's got a tiny scratch or dent they won't bring it to your attention or let you see it unless you are very lucky! If the dealer can put the blame on VW UK then they may authorise something, but if your dealer has to assume responsibility for it then they will become as slippery as a net full of eels. More likely as I said, they'll offer to do a smart repair which will still be covered by all paintwork and bodywork warranties and maybe will offer you some freebies to pacify you somewhat. However if it was VWKev on the forecourt kicking off they would probably give him a brand new V10 Tuareg just to get shot of him.
So to clarify, my advice is to use a bit of common sense and fully inspect the car in the dry before handing over the balance of your payment.

I agree with what vwkev said i.e. that a brand new car should not have any damage on it and that as a customer, I should ask for a replacement. But at the same time I agree with Exonian as well. What we want and what prevails in reality are two issues. I am not sure what my decision will be at the moment since I have not gone to see the car again. I am waiting for the license plates to get done. Its almost a month now. I was told the delay is due to a large amount of cars that need registration. So tough luck.
My plan is when I am due to collect the car, I will examine the repair work. If I am not satisfied, I will make my point know. However, if the repair is done perfectly, then I will just take it. Been waiting for too long as it is.
What Exonian says is true, some cars that come in have some minor damage during transport but most people are unaware because its been touched up of repaired before the customer sees it. Good or bad, depends on the individual. In my case, I wished I had not seen it... sigh...

Well, in the "It's on the boat!" thread, I mentioned having crossed the channel in a boat with a very large number of new Fiestas on it. I was on a bicycle. The Fiestas were between me (and my friend) and the off ramp, and there wasn't a soul in sight. In the end we had to manoeuvre two bicycles (with panniers) through the tightly-packed Fiestas to get to the off ramp.
My friend had a new Fiesta of her own at the time, and kept yelling "don't touch the cars!" all the time we were doing this. And we were very careful, and we barely disturbed the dust on the paintwork. However, after seeing that, to my mind it's a bloody miracle if a car makes it over the channel without needing at least a little bit of touch-up. They're just parked on the car deck, and other passengers have to get past them as well as they can. It's sheer luck.
I suspect a lot of these cars do need scratches fixed when they get to the dealer. And the dealers are used to it. And most owners will never know it happened, and what you don't know doesn't hurt you.
Rolfe.

It's not just women on bikes either, from last year:

I remember some years ago seeing a report of flooding somewhere, involving a large car park or marshalling area with a lot of brand new cars on it. A lot of them were sitting over their wheel arches in muddy water.
That was a real nasty. I wondered at the time if they would just try to repair the damage and sell the cars as new, or salvage them and dispose of them at a reduced price. I sure wouldn't have wanted my new car to be siting in muddy water, engine and upholstery and all!
Rolfe.
-
At least with a factory order it's unlikely to be sat around at the docks long, unless it is going to go on the next reg plate so there's no rush to get it to the stealer.
The bog standard rep-mobile stuff can sit around for yonks at the ports waiting for someone to buy them on the dealer systems. All it takes is a couple of rain storms and the places can quickly get underwater. What sort of weather have we been having lately by the way? :lipsrsealed:
So maybe the ones VW have in stock already need a good looking over for tide marks?
-
On the subject of the scratches on delivery mine is absolutely spotless so if it's been touched up it certainly doesn't look like it has been. And if it has so what - it's perfect now so that's fine by me.
Interestingly, I had parking sensors put on by a local car electrics firm and it was touch or go whether he'd be able to do them as the carbon grey is a new colour to him. In the end he's done a fantastic job and they match perfectly. So if an auto specialist in Pontefract can do a colour match you'd expect a dealer to be able to do it for the odd scratch.
I've done 250 miles now and I'm absolutely bowled over by the car. I absolutely love it. In fact if I had to choose between the car and the wife at the moment I'd choose the car every time!!!!! I'll probably give it a 1000 miles or so before letting rip with it. However, I can't help flooring it now in low gears - the rorty sound is so addictive.
-
hehe - great to hear it andy. interesting point you make re: the noise. many mags have not rated the noise it makes at all, and yet you're not even ragging it yet!
can i press a fast fwd button on my wait pls?!
-
Maybe it's what you've come from. I came from a Saab 93 150 hp diesel which was a perfectly worthy car but a complete contrast to the GTi and it certainly didn't have a rorty exhaust note!!!! I just love listening to the pops and splurges from the exhaust and the noise on acceleration but if you've come from something similar then I suppose the novelty isn't there.
-
Well, in my book, the quieter the better. If this silly "noise generator" actually does anything, I'm going to ask about getting it deactivated. Or, I read somewhere that it was optional, so maybe that means you can switch it off?
Rolfe.

Nope. VW have just named it a noise generator, but it actually serves no purpose unless you giving it some. i.e. anything under 5k revs and you will not even know its there.
p.s. I know you keep your cars a long time Rolfe but can I buy yours off you when it comes to selling time
-
Why would you want to turn the noise generator off. If I'd wanted a quiet, subtle car I'd have bought the Lexus I nearly did buy before test driving the GTi.
Anyway, my most pressing problem now is the wife wants to borrow my GTi to take to work tomorrow while I'm off. Foolishly I said she could but only on the condition that if there's the tiniest mark on it (or woe betide if she kerbs the alloys) then she's divorced!!!!
Anyone know any good divorce lawyers just in case?
