Thanks for all your efforts in discussing my £8000 budget for a MK2
No joy so the search is on hold - will continue to watch the ads but I had thought I would flush out someone with a car
Keep enjoying the cars

Have you entered the fifth gear comp, I know it is not oak green but looks a nice car.

Thanks for the update. Remember to keep us posted at all stages of your car search.
ADMIN: Perhaps this should be made into a sticky, so people don't miss it??

good luck with your search, i think your gonna have to be very patient! there cant be many left out there
-
Just wait until the right one comes along. Was probably a bad idea to advertise the fact your got 8K to spend, because you probably got all sorts of muppets offering there cars. Why not buy an oak green for a couple thousand, a nice one, and spend the rest on making it fully pearlers.
-
At least you've got the exposure you need now. In several months time, if/when a mint oak green 16v 3 door appears in the for sale section, someone will mention you, and how much you are willing to pay to the seller. You've also probably single-handedly increased the sale price of mint 16v Mk2s! It may take time, but one will appear at some point.
As other people have mentioned, there's a lot to be said for getting one modded or less than perfect with decent bodywork and doing it up yourself - if you work on the car yourself, or get a garage you trust to work on it for you, you get to appreciate how mint it really is, as opposed to how mint it appears!

Will keep you posted
Watching and waiting
I have a friend who buys cars for one of the VW specialists and he is also looking
Trouble is that I am after a 3 door, well looked after Oak Green big bumper unmodified 16v GTI Mk2
Nothing else will do!!
One day and hopefully I can avoid paying anywhere near £8000. Saw a nice one about three months ago on P Heads for £5000 but I called and it was gone after 1 hour of being posted
The chase is part of the fun though

I agree - just make sure you don't get frustrated with it all and end up settling for something it isn't 100% right for YOU. :)
-
Many thanks
No I won't do that . Don't need another car but its something that I would buy and keep - only if its the right car though
The car I sold three years ago was exactly what I am looking for but that car is never going to be sold as the the buyer now wins all the shows in it - J41 CUL. People might know the car . 3 door, 16v Oak Green mk2 GTI!!!
-
I spent over a year looking for the right one, same spec as you want too, persevere...

£8000 is a very nice amount for a mk2. I hope you find the one you're looking for!
-
It does intrigue me that £8000 does not attract any serious cars
Mind you if you have a mint 16v would you read this anyway + then would you sell
I have another car that I would never sell unless the offer was really stupid as I know that I will never ( well almost never) find another car with the same history and condition
What would make someone sell?
Thats another thread that I don't really want to start
-
I was looking on pistonheads before, and there are some NICE 16valvers. Theres one that I'm interested in that has been owned by one family since birth! Pics to prove it too.
-
I think I may have found your MK2, maybe not the colour you want - BUT it looks GREAT!

By the way, I'll take the other £4250 as a finders fee
-
Jay, that's minging.

shhh - I'll split the finders fee with you

As I said in my original post on this subject, I think that your going to struggle to find what you want, most of the mint O/Gs will have been filtered through to the true enthusiasts, probably a few years ago,
and would still need some sort of cosmetic work to bring them up to scratch, so why pay a premium. By hook or by crook, most parts ARE still available, go for something that has a mint rust free body, and a "as good as it gets interior" pay 4/5k for that car, and the balance, bringing up to concours, and ready for next season...

Possibly the ideal compromise - thankfully I can see that red is not green and 8 valvers are not 16 valvers so I may stand a chance of buying Mk2 big bumper 3 door Oak Green 16v
Has been an interesting thread
One day!
-
welcome to my grey valver for 4K mate, body very good, engine very good!
-
Thanks for the offer but I am happy to pay a top price for the car that I want
Oak Green Mk2 Big Bumper 3 Door 16v GTI - low miles, good history, MOTs
Thanks to the guys who ahve offered various cars but I am happy to wait for the right car
If three months pass I might look at a restoration project . Not sure who would do that . Is that a new thread?

Nice car, I'll offer you £1.65 and not a penny more. J/K The car does look very nice from your sig though. I've always liked grey mk2's, something about 'em.

With nothing on the horizon and summer lethargy upon us is it time to give up the search?
Almost a full time job - Autotrader, P Heads , e-bay ....
Tried various forums but nothing worthy offered
Need an option - Corrado VR6 , Storm variety also looking at but thats drawn a blank
Where are all the standard cherished cars - cherished and not for sale!!!

No offence, but one minute you DESPARATELY want a VERY SPECIFIC Mk2, and are willing to spend way, way more than is necessary. You spend a couple of months (if that) looking for one, can't find one, then suddenly have a change of heart and want a Corrado instead?? Bear in mind it took me 6 months to find my 16v, and it only cost me £1000.
I suppose at least you can go on Corrado.net now and say "Hey guys, look, I've got £25,000 to spend on a Corrado!!!"
-
Meeeeee LOL ooooooW

In all fairness this guy did crop up originally about a year ago with a 4k budget so I think he's been looking for a fair while.
Don't give up hope yet, the right car comes up eventually. It took me a year to find my motor and I travelled the length of the country literally (early morning flight to edinburgh on a sunday to look at a dog) and looked at a lot of rough (supposedly mint) motors. My search criteria was identical except mine also HAD to be on a j plate. In the end I found mine and paid £3295 for it. It was 100% standard back then and I've only made subtle mods to it since and kept all the standard parts of course. That was almost 5 years ago though, maybe they have become a lot harder to find since then, I was looking at about 1 car a month back then.
Had you considered buying a VERY tidy mk2 for about 2k then sitting on the other 6k until the perfect car comes along? At least it might satisfy your urge for a mk2 and allow you to find that perfect example without straying to another model which will ALWAYS leave you wondering "what if?"
-

Maybe I am being unfair then, but give me £4k and a year and some serious conviction, and I'll find you a mint Oak Green. With a budget of £8k, I'll buy you a minter and make it super-mint. Easy.
Unless of course you've got seriously OTT demands, or indeed, live in a fantasy world.
Perhaps the multiple threads this guy has posted on the same subject have made me tetchy. I'll get back in the grumpy corner.
-
I can imagine it's certainly becoming more difficult now. It took me a year and I had lots of conviction, in fact I used about half my holiday from work that year. I'd get to work, carry out my daily scour and if I found something I'd be on the road by lunchtime.
Back then there was a constant stream of oak green mk2's going up on the autotrader website, today there isn't a single one!!! In fact there's probably less than 20 mk2's in total nationwide on the autotrader website. Volkswizards stock was almost entirely mk2's when I was looking now they are the minority.

I have looked for many months with no joy - have missed three by not seeing PHeads on the hour the ad popped up so my offer of £8000 was in desparation in many ways. Its not market value , its over the top , its not sensible but even with all that no car has been offered that comes anywhere close to a good quality Mk2 16v
I have a friend who sources cars for one of the Mk2/Corrado specialists and he has drawn a blank for many months too.
I can afford to buy a Corrado Storm + a mint 16v so yes I have a similar post on the Corrado forum - and guess what no takers either. More offers but not close enough.
My only conclusion is that fewer and fewer cars are around and subject to watching every site all day I just need a bit of luck or , as I had hoped, a response to my £8000 budget
Tried £6000 on the 16v forum and got nothing either!
Will vanish off your radar for now - but thanks for the words of encouragement from the positive members.
