Hi all
My mate/colleague has just bought a 1 yr old Focus ST (Offensive/Jaffa/Tango/Dayglo/Electric) Orange.
I own a mk5 GTI (black) and have a mk6 on order (black).
We are having a bit of office banter about cars, he just doesn't get the VW/GTI thing.
My car is way too expensive and only a fool would spend that sort of money when you can get sooooo much more on a Ford...
I've already done the sunglasses in the car park for 2 days and given him details of many breakdown services.
Any ideas, please!

You could start with Clarkson's Top Gear review, in which he reveals what "ST" normally stands for (in the context of feminine hygiene that is....) and re-names it the "Focus ASBO".

And for the text version....

Don’t get it in orange, and don’t get the bonnet stripes. You tit
His parting shot is that the best thing about the car is that it also comes in blue....

Didnt Jeremy Clarkson refer to the ST standing for the Sanitary Towel?

I was trying to be delicate and discreet here....
It's not a bad review, but he doesn't half poke fun at the looks of the thing. I originally considered an ST myself, and I guess I'd have been quite happy (in blue), but I decided it was worth ponying up the extra for the VW.

ST sounds lovely! Also is great at overtaking, other than that its not very good.
-
I couldn't think of a better car for moddeling my baseball caps in and picking up 15 year old girls

Ported from the original thread.
I cannot believe anyone in their right senses would go for that puke inducing orange!!  come to that why would anyone go for a ford focus be it an ST or RS it's a positively ugly looking great beast of a thing.
Now that's interesting. A guy at work has just bought a 1.6 litre Focus Zetec, in silver. I went out to the car park to have a look, and I was quite disappointed. I didn't think it was ugly, but I did think it was "a great beast of a thing". (I got laughed at by a bunch of Yanks for calling it "quite a big beast", and they started posting pictures of Cadillacs and Lincolns!)
The Golf is about the same size on actual measurements, but it looks much more sleek and neat.

Yeah Rolfe
I'm with you, compared to the focus the golf is uber neat!!
-
I like the Focus. It's good to drive. Better steering than the Golf.
To annoy chappie trade in the Golf for an RS.
-
You could flaunt your DSG and ACC, if you've got them. I was trying to configure a Focus as near as I could to the Golf I just ordered, and realised neither of these was available. At all.

At the risk of being flamed....I love the orange. Really pearly and deep enough to dive into. As to the fact its a Focus and not a VW, how many of those that have commented have actually driven one? I haven't, but I've heard the engine is a peach.
-
Nowt wrong with the ST in my book. Although the orange is waaaay to "LOOK AT ME IN MY ORANGE ST" for my liking.

Are you serious - trade in my GTI for an RS, I'd rather stick pins somewhere very painful!

Am the only one that doesnt think it looks that bad lol ? ? ?
Saw one in this colour in the flesh at Goodwood last week and looked MEAN.
Lets not also forget it goes like stink !

urm thats the RS Alan NOT the ST
-
Both RS and ST are nice, not nice enough to own over a GTI imo. The Focus does have a superb chassis though (as do all fords, even the KA is brilliant to drive!)
-
Enough of the polite compliments for Fords.
Any funnies/insults/pee takes ???

A Golf GTI says "I'm doing well but don't need to shout about it".
A Focus ST says "I am a complete idiot with a small thingy".
The Golf is a well made understated car with a proud heritage.
The Focus is a poorly made piece of tat driven by c*cks.

Just as well I didn't get one then!

worst case of brand blinkers ever?

lol ! You think . . .
-
Nothing wrong with an ST, 2.5 Volvo T5 lump is a great engine and very tweakable, the RS is mad but I would love one.
They only made 2500 orange St's as it cost Ford £1k extra on each for the house of colours paint.

Yes I do have a bad case of brand blinkers - no apologies for that! In all seriousness, I do find the Focus ST a bit too 'in your face' with the bodykit and various add ons. I will admit however, that it's quite cheap and drives very well indeed. Thirsty though.
-
To be honest, it was the Golf's fuel economy that made me stop screeching in my tracks and look at it more seriously, when I'd started off looking at the ST.
I wouldn't ever have been seen dead in the RS.

Used to be the case but they are a lot better now, Mazda and Volvo's are running a lot of the same parts, new Mazda 3 is a Focus underneath.

Oh rly?
OK, this isn't fair 'cos this time 2 weeks ago I was seriously considering getting an ST.
Nevermind.
I was driving home from work a couple of hours ago and noticed a big breakdown truck sitting in a small layby, with a car parked beyond it. What have we here, I thought, and made a point of looking to see what it was. The breakdown truck was pulled up in front of a beautiful metallic blue Focus, sitting absolutely stationary with its bonnet up.

I think there an awesome car, my gf's brother has one in orange, stands out and is really nice inside!
Almost went for one, then I saw the GTi! -Decision made!!
-
Your GF's brother might as well email the cops and invite them to send him a speeding ticket, in my opinion. A nice blue Focus that happens to be an ST is one thing. Agent Orange is something else!

Funny enough, I've just part-exed my 3 year old focus ST for a Mk 6 Golf GTi. I have to say, I was sorry to see the old focus go. Not only did it give me 3 years of hassle free motoring, but it was a 'Hoot' to drive (I especially loved the Quattro-esque sound of the 5 cylinder and the little pops from the exhaust on the over-run). O.K so the driving position was a little on the high side and the fuel consumption is appalling, but overall its a fantastic car for the money. I remember paying just under 18K for it, when it was first released. The new Golf on the other hand has set me back just over 24K.
Having said that, the ST is now begining to show its age and the game has moved on in terms of refinement and build quality. I love the new Golf... it looks so much more elegant, understated... fuel consumption is brilliant and the cabin quality is top notch.... the overall performance is nothing to be laughed at as well.
However my only gripe, is that it lacks the playful character of the ST... The GTi feels almost too clinical... The steering feels a little light and artificial compared to the ST, but at the end of the day I know which car I would rather be sitting in and its parked on my drive as we speak.

When pushed the ST has appaling economy... even worse than the R32!! :nerd:
