I've been cursing the handbrake design on the MK2 Golf for 2 weeks now after my GTi handbrake failed and it rolled down a large hill into a tree ( I KNOW i should have left it in gear too... ?:-[ ) Written off - completely.
Anyway - would very much like a MK3 but have heard it's nto the car the MK2 was! I see from the perfermance figures it's not too good - is the 16V the only option to go for?
What's the insurance like? Group?
Cheers all!

Hi Michael,
That sounds a shame about the mk2 :( but hey this could still turn out well ;)
In terms of performance the mk3 8v is a bit weak. It looks like a GTI and I would say that the handling and general drive would still make you smile. However you might get diesel vans beating you at the traffic light grand prix :P
The 16v is the best balance in terms of performance per ?. A VR6 can be expensive - large fuel bills!
MK3 Insurance groups:
8v - 14
16v - 16
VR6 - 16/17
Regards,
jv

So sorry I didn't ever reply to this!!
Nearly 10 years ago now, crikey! Didn't even realise I'd been a member so long!
Since those fateful days ( it was written off) I've had 4 mk2's and still have one now. I've had a mk3 and one mk4 and a mk1 cabby!
Just the one mk2 now though, just drawn back to them! Great cars.
Thanks for your help and advice though, I didn't stray too far from the fold!

Thom - I really can't remember! Old age you see... I think I bought another mk2, then another mk2 and then the mk3 I think? So....a year or two I guess?
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would but it had the fateful rear arches....
Back to mk2.... Ahh.

Awesome post digging!!
Michael's account is so old it has the ancient YaBB text and the broken modify post date!
Forum was only 3 months old, no wonder the sarcasm was yet to be installed :)
