That's basically what i'm considering doing. My Astra isn't standard, but it's not had much done to it. Mainly cosmetics, but other than that, i had a bigger air intake pipe fitted (which later tests seem to show doesn't do a great deal), a K&N air filter & a Cybox exhaust off of eBay. But for the purposes of this, we'll call it totally standard & assume the Golf is also standard (even though i'd be looking to change that if bought).
We'll go 2 scenarios:
1. at the lights. The 0-60. What sort of difference would you expect between the 2?
2. where it really matters - the overtaking. So let's say, 30-70mph (random numbers). Again, what difference between the 2 cars would you expect?
I've no doubt that all in, the Golf is a much better car. I'm just curious about performance in the above 2 scenarios. Thanks.

what power does the 1.8 Astra have?? is it petrol or diesel??
1. 0-60 - i've said it before and i'll keep saying it - why are people bothered about 0-60 times?? how many times are you actually involved in traffic light races?? racing between the lights ain't cool or smart. Save it for the drag strip
2. If the astra is petrol and has approx the same bhp as the Golf expect it to be left in a big cloud of smoke. Mid Range is where diesel is king
need some info about the Astra before passing adding any more comments

hi mate im relativly new to the vw game i bought a gt tdi 150 the difference between the 130 and 150 is quite substantial in my opinion so glad i tested both i also put 40quid in deisel and got 440 miles out if it so its class on fuel and no i did not drive like miss daisy either bottom line is both cars will be alot faster then the astra especially between 30 and 80mph

The MK4Astra only ever did a petrol version of the 1.8, but they did more than 1 version, so i should've given you more info really.
this is the car i've got currently: http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=18572
Regarding the 0-60...
It's a term you see used all over the place. That's why i used it. I don't "race" and don't intend to race. I was simply wanting an indication of the performance of the Golf vs the performance of the Astra linked above from a standstill (that'd be the 0) to the legal limit of our main roads (that'd be where the 60 comes into it). Am not interested in racing at all on the main road or a drag strip :). The traffic lights bit probably had you misunderstanding the question.
So yeah, just against each other from standstill to 60
& also from 30ish to 70ish (not in a race, i'm just asking about 1 cars performance vs another) :)
EDIT:
Just had a look at the stats
Golf bhp: 130
Astra bhp: 123
Golf Torque: 310 Nm 228 lb-ft
Astra Torque: 170 Nm 125 lb-ft
Golf Weight: 1261 kg
Astra Weight: 1190 kg
Now although i can see that the Golf is clearly more powerful.........i'm not mechanically minded & don't know what those numbers equate to.
Are we talking the Golf would be ahead, but not by much up unto [x-mph]
OR
are we talking the Golf would be way off ahead before the Astra has even hit 2nd gear (exaggeration, but you get the idea)?

fairy muff about 0-60
looking at those stats it would appear to be a bit of a no brainer!!! Although the Astra's slight weight advantage may help a little the fact the Golf has more power and nearly twce the torque means that 30-70 even in standard format the Golf would leave the Astra far behind
0-60 i would still expect it a little close due to the fact diesels are usually slow off the mark but once they hit their stride theirs little to compete
get a 130, get it mapped and enjoy 170bhp, 300lbs ft torque and 50mpg

Cheers for the info. As a know-nothing when it comes to these figures & what they mean, i didn't really know what the difference would be.
I think it'll be about 1-2 years before i can/do get the Golf. Dependant on circumstances, my budget would be £4k. Possibly £4.5k max. If circumstances change & me & the g/f go single car, then the budget may be more like £5k. But we'll assume £4k for now.
Should i expect much of a [130] for that, or would i need to raise the budget a bit?
Obviously, if i have bottom-less pockets, i could afford a top of the line GT TDI, but that isn't the scenario (that last bit is for anyone saying, yeah but if you just up your budget 3k then.... :D lol)
-
if you're not buying for 1-2 years then 3.5K should easily secure you a tidy 130 - heck i'll sell you mine
also most 130's came in the GT trim (there a few SE versions kicking about)

Cheers for the info given.
I was just wondering 1 thing about the golf. Is there a "trusted seller" on fleabay you can buy exhausts to fit for the GT TDI from?
Such as with the Astra i currently have, "Cybox" come heavily recommended on the Astra networks http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/cybox100_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZ & they do exhausts direct to fit, with ZERO faffing about.
Just wondering if there's something similar for the GT TDI
-
Milltek or a custom place are about the only 2 really
not sure if Blueflame do anything for the TDI's :undecided:
-
blueflame do exhausts for the tdi and thay are reasonably priced http://www.blueflameperformance.com/prange.php?modelid=565&makeid=115&pageid=3 (http://www.blueflameperformance.com/prange.php?modelid=565&makeid=115&pageid=3)

They're all more expensive than Milltech
