Title: goes into first but not reverse , frustrated.
Post by: Mrpug on 04 July 2009, 20:41
Yesterday, after finishing ALL the linkage/shifter bushings, The proper shifter alignment tool, for the obvious. After adjusting the shifter 3-5 times , the she shifter would'nt find reverse and kept going into first, even will go into the reverse slot. Does the linkage on the main shift rod, need to be moved forward or back closer to the shifter? Or does/can the linkage be moved left or right to help with gear selection? 1- 5 can be found, with some minor trouble. no matter if the clutch is adjusted, still has trouble. any suggestions.

you could try moving it anticlockwise a bit or if you have a cassette tape use the thick end of that in place of the alignment tool, its always got it spot on for me

good suggestion, the casset trick works, I taped something the width of a credit card onto the casset w/ duct tape. wraped the tape a few times, did the alignment, the shifter went into rev. no problem. I dare not touch it, 1st is just right side barely touching the gate. NOW, it shifts properly, short pull, positive engaugement, and hits all 5 gears.  what more could I ask for ....yeehaa!!!  now,it's time to drive!!

did you do the gearstick housing under the car?

Yea, the linkange bushings, shifter bushing & ball housing, and a rebuilt trans. The dub got test drove on satuday. & got driven to work today, in 5 o'clock traffic, stop & go 2nd - 4th if it's slow flowing up to 50 mph. just some fine tuning like getting the pattern to move  abit more to the psenger side about 1/8 - 1/4". Then the shifter will hit the right spot. I'm curious,  moving the clamp up and down the main shaft what does that affect? does it change the neutral or when the shifter goes into gear???

ah ok, prob just needs a fine tune like you say. where did you mget the alignment tool from, maybe its been made wrong?  or maybe theres summat up with the shifter/housing.  I've used the tool many times and its always been spot on.

Moving it up/down the shaft effects where the gearstik sits in neutral, this will obviously effect where you need to move the stick to select gears. it wont effect the distance the stick needs to move though, just where the gears are.

edit: actually I've just had a thought, I've heard the veryt late MK2s had an eccentric adjuster under the stick, to allow fine tuning, perhaps yours has this?

i dont know if this will help at all but i have recently done this job also
i found the main shaft sticks out of the clamp about 15mm it was like this before and after the job and my gears are spot on
thankfully i took some pics before i stripped it because i was unsure of this too

The casset trick works pretty good. I used the the casset way, it'll hit spot on. I looked for the accentric, mine was made 5/88 i'm thinking that mine was made a little early for the accentric.

Lol - I didn't have a cassette handy, so I settled with cardboard and duct tape - its been fine for me for 2 years.
