Title: driver wing mirror with auto dim on 2008 GTI

I want to replace my driver side wing mirror unit. I have a 2008 GTI without the auto dim feature and was wondering if I could simply buy a unit with this feature and install it or does the auto dim feature require additional hardware for it to work?

AFAIK the additional hardware is in the mirror so you should be OK.

I've never really understood what the extra hardware is for?  Surely it could be software controlled - select reverse and mirrors dip.  They both dip when you adjust the drivers side so I don't see why a little tweek couldn't be done so that it happened with you select reverse. 

Apparantly not though...

They have to be electric folding mirrors tho first don't they!?

Yes thats the ones that have reverse dip.  I can understand what the additional hardware for folding them is but not so much for the auto dipping.

Unless it dips in a different way to 'manually dipping' them?

I thought this is what the OP was getting but now I've read it properly I'm a bit confused.  Auto dim is in the interior mirror rather than the outside ones? :huh:

If you have the lux pack you'll get an auto-dimming driver side door mirror in addition to the interior rear view one.

On pre MY2006 cars with the lux pack included both driver and passenger door mirrors with auto-dimming.   :smiley:

Lol is the op talking about auto dim? (ie darkens when dazzled by corsa boy behind) or auto dip, where the drivers side dips down when reverse is selected. I've got a my06 with lux, I do not have the auto dip.

Maybe I'm just being dim.....  :laugh:

Cheers for the responses. I am talking about auto dim. I heard that with the early luxury packs the drivers wing mirror auto dimmed to minimise glare, however later models did not have that function. My question is: if I buy a wing driver's side wing mirror with the auto dim feature (if one exists at all) can I simply retro-fit it to my 2008 model (which does not have this feature)?

I can confirm that my MY2006 (55) dims (ie gets darker) when some twit drives behind me with full beam on...  :cool:
