Went for a test drive today in a brand spanking new silver 5dr Gti, complete with leather, dsg (which i didnt want but hey), and 18"monza shadows. Only had 5 miles on the clock and I was given the task of loosening up the dealership managers new car for him
In silver it didnt really stand out much which I kind of liked, although the trade plates ensured we got plenty of looks. First impressions...
the cabin is much better put together than the MK5 it has to be said, i wasnt a fan of all the chrome bits before but as you get used to the cabin it just starts to feel normal and you can see that functionality has definately been improved, as has most importantly build quality. The cabin was totally rattle free as you would expect but felt on par with a few audis I have driven.
Wing mirrors also seem to be a tad bigger (??).. and have a clever little light that flashes on the inside of the mirror which you can see when you are indicating. A little distracting when i first noticed them, but purposeful no doubt.
Now the ride seemed to be a little more planted and although the salesman kept stressing that the r32 is heavy it felt just as well balanced as the R on most corners, providing you werent planting your right foot at the same time. Much has been made of the improved quality of the ride and quietness in the cabin. Ride has definately improved, helped by the interior and just being a little screwed together better if you know what I mean. As for the quietness i wouldnt agree that it is much quieter, now this maybe down to the road quality, crap sportmaxx, or the missing V6 soundtrack but I am convinced there was more road noise??
On a couple of overtaking manouvers it was pedal to the metal and thanks to the dry conditions the dsg did its thing and hit optimum revs, and off she went!! no real fuss straight into the turbo range, and she did pull nice. The sound seemed to be much nicer than I found with previous versions of the 2.0tfsi engine, and at full throttle it sounded nice... not V6 nice... but nice  Sitting in traffic was a little embarassing tbh.. but hey ho :embarassed:
Sooooooo did I manage to make it understeer or wheels spin??? yeah of course i did but it wasnt too bad and I think that with manual (proper) gears it would be fairly controlable. I think overall the MK6 seemed to be a little better balanced, and with the improved build quality it will suprise many audi and bmw drivers and i genuinely believe that... but i guess time will tell.
As a mk5 driver we all want to belive that the mk6 isnt as good as we think.. im sure the mk4 owners were telling themselves the same thing when the mk5 appeared. In truth its actually alot better than i expected and will no doubt make getting rid of the R32 a very very little bit easier. Im actually looking forward to getting mine a lot more now that I have driven one.. and even more so when I had the sales guy run me off a list of prices on finance
Gets a thumbs up from moi

I drove the R32 and the MKV GTI a couple of years ago when I was looking for a car and thought that the MKV was the better car, even though I can appreciate the appeal of the R32. Never ended up getting either but since had the Scirocco and now the MKVI, they're all pretty similar yet so distinctively different.
I'm extremely happy with the MKVI even with only 500 miles on her since Saturday. Had the dealer tweak some settings today (1 press entry for all doors and auto lock after pulling away) but am struggling to find anything to buy for it. No GTI sill covers yet blah blah blah!
-
my new mk vi comes in 2 weeks....still deciding about mud flaps. Anyone got them on theirs ?..do they fit properly?. When I got my mk v in 2005 they didn't do flaps for the GTI.

Why on Earth have you ordered a manual version?
As you found out the DSG is worth an extra 100+ bhp in real life.
Money saving madness.

call me stupid but what is one press entry for all doors? isnt it just pressing the unlock button on the key the same thing     :lipsrsealed:

Hi Stupid!! Only kidding!!!!!
Most cars are supplied with the locking set for 1 press unlocks drivers door only, 2 presses and they all unlock. This can be modified via VAG-COM, VCDS or better still the dealership. HTH

yes, quite right, when you press the unlock button it will only do the drivers door, you have to press twice for all doors but that can be changed by the dealer so that one press unlocks all doors. Just as he just said stupid!

nothing to do with money saving. I wouldnt take dsg if i was given it for free. Takes away the whole driving experience, and makes the Gti too go-kart ish imo, not to mention the well known dsg problems and flaws. Was given a dsg as a courtesy car for 3.5 weeks and if im honest I hated every corner/roundabout i went round.
I can appreciate that not all owners have drive to and from work on open a/b roads and a number of wide and tight roundabouts like I get to so etto i guess.
Dsg might be great round a track for optimum speed, but eliminates the most important factor..... fun!
-
Personally find DSG more fun and not aware of the 'well known' problems? I knock it into manual for the roundabout and she sails smoothly round it in which ever gear i choose ready for a boot!
I wish i could drive on open a/b roads and a number of wide and tight roundabouts with the DSG! Into manual followed by a big grin
-
I know im a bit of a lucky bugger.. leave for work at 6:15 and drive home at 10:15!! hmmm not so lucky i guess :undecided:
Did you know that the GTi book now shows the 0-60 times both with and without dsg as identical now :lipsrsealed:
AND... that the manual is actually faster overall
-
Still slower than the R32 DSG

Still slower than the R32 DSG
And thats slower than the S3.
And thats slower than the WRX Sti
And thats slower than........
Pointless really isnt it ?

A half decent motorcycle can see them all off.
Like the man says, what's the point?

dare I say still slower than the r32 manual :lipsrsealed:
ohh well remap on its way!
-
Well my Scirocco was DSG and even though I thought it was an amazing gearbox, i've gone for a manual for a more 'involved' driving experience. I had an A4 1.8T with the multitronic box (or multitragic as Audi dealers refer to it) and had three gearboxes in 2 years, wouldn't want that car out of the warranty period! Not saying DSG could be the same but I really don't think the cost of the DSG or leather is really justified for the benefits on offer.
Each to their own though eh?
