Unlucky!..... the last time i did one was on a carbed engined cab, i had a mate help.  If you're gonna pay then it depends on the garage but I forked out £250 at a cheap garage a few years ago on on a turbo D, the head needed skimming.

In Parts about £50 but in Labour about £400.

Don't even think about VW....It would scare you!

I was lucky to find someone so cheap then!  I got one done for free once on my green cab by an old mate i lost touch with that was on an 8v carb engine.  what car is it you need it changing on, its not as hard as it looks although my mate did most of the work!

All depends on how the gasket blew?
At high speed is your worst scenario
If it tended to go at a slow speed you might just get away with just the gasket but at high speed you have more chance of a cracked head...whatever or however it went get the head skimmed because if you don't and is was it will blow again.
Might be worth getting the head tested aswell.

Is it definitely the head? Have you tested the compression or are you going on water in your oil or oil in your water sort of thing?
The reason I ask is that if your oil cooler has gone it dumps a lot of oil into your coolant, which can make you (ok it made me!) think your head has gone when it hasn't.
Doing the head gasket isn't the hardest job but you'll need a torque wrench and a couple of specialist bits.
