when i bought my mkV i did not even know they had them, as im sure many ppl who sell there mkV take them out.
my friend had a goof as company car and has just changed the car but took the bottle opener out and gave it to me.
-
The bottle openers only came with cars with the arm rest option. There are two type of bottle opener. The early versions are all metal, the later ones are wrapped in plastic.
-
I have an armrest but no bottle opener
-
Got one but its the new style as the previous owner had liberatated the original all metal one. Made sure the dealer replaced it before I drove off....
-
I wish the biggest worry i have with my car was if it has a bottle opener or not!
-
i dont know how i have one
didnt come with any car it's just in my house lol
-
mine has the armrest, but didnt come with the opener, but I didnt get it new,
Got a plastic one off e bay for a fiver.
Don't really think its the best thing though, encouraging owners to open a cold one whilst in the car
-
Picked my new one up today, all metal with the VW logo stamped in the middle, only bought it to complete the cup holder function..
£15 + Vat though  If i'd realised it was that much i'd have jammed the cup between my leg's instead!!!!

Just ordered a cheapy of ebay but its the newer type which is plastic coated. Hopefully it will look ok. I too just wanted it to I could use the cup holders.
-
My '06 plate didn't have one in it when I collected from the dealer (forgot to ask them to put on in it). Luckily, I used to work for VW and I already had one of the metal ones 'in stock' so to speak.
Bit pointless though, when was the last time you bought a non-alcholic drink that had a metal cap on it?
-
Mine was in when i picked the car up.All metal.
-
The best ones are all metal with black plastic over the middle bit.
If you prefer the all metal look then simply cut off the plastic.
-
I didn't get one, but they can easily be purchased off eBay.
Don't know about you guys but I don't tend to drink bottles (which is basically code for beer as what other drinks these days come in bottles that require a bottle opener) whilst driving . . .
-
You can still get bottles of coke with metal caps.
-
That is true, but really, who buys them . . . .
Maybe in a bar or something, but not for in the car. You have cans dont you.
-
Many parts of the world use crown top bottles for water and pop.
-
my friend buys crates of J2O, dont think he takes one driving though and if he did im sure it would be opened already
-
Without the Bottle Opener there's no effective cup holder
-
Mine didnt come with it, but i 'acquired' one, used it quite a few times, mostly when camping, to be honest though the main reason you want one is that it divides the space into two cup sized holes rather than 1 big one.
-
Ah, thats what I need ! I always have to use the cup holders in the rear.

This is it isnt it?
-
Yeah that's the (later) plastic one. Not a bad price either.
-
But will fit in my MK5?
-
AlanD that looks like the one I've got.
Even with the bottle opener the cup holders arn't a patch on the mk4 ones  I wouldn't trust driving anywhere with a cup of anything. I think the non armrest ones are better?
-
Oh yeah, the MK4 ones where brilliant.
The ones in the rear of our MK5s are similar / the same to what the MK4 had in the front which is why I use them as they are pretty sturdy.
-
I like the A3 cup holder which pops out of the dash. It is even located under the air vent so that your beverage gets some air con air to help keep it cool.
-
Without the Bottle Opener there's no effective cup holder
+1. I don't use it to open bottles, more to secure my can of red bull.
-
Can't imagine the plastic one to fit into the space provided tho in the tray!?
-
It does

Thats the one I have as well....
-
yeh thats the bottle opener i have now, straight outta mk6 into my mk5
-
I took mine out of the car as it annoys the **** out of me when it is in. The pens and remote that I have rattle against it when it is there
-
Got the metal one in there, it clearly has never been used to open a bottle.
Makes a quirky cup holder though, another bit of added character the Golf has over other VAG cars?
It'll be handy when camping to open the bottles of wife-beater, I mean Stella.
-
Without the Bottle Opener there's no effective cup holder
WITH the bottle opener there's still no effective cup holder either
I've used mine when camping at Inters and other shows. I was on my way to Inters this year and had a sinking feeling in my stomach when I realised I'd not packed one.....then remembered that there's always one in the car!
I bought my car new and it was the first thing I checked when the car got handed over to me!
The Mk 4 cupholders that popped out of the dash were better though. I find the Mk 5 cupholders don't hold anything bigger than a 330ml can without it toppling over  (I usually buy a 500ml bottle).
-
I took mine out when it was in the Garage... its now in my Alfa haha got to have some German engineering in there somewhere
-
quite surprised really - mine's on 05, and STILL has the metal opener.
Only used it once so far, but prefer the look over the plastic (coated) version.
DAn
