hi all, I've recently bought a golf cabby for the mrs and i'm having a few problems. its fitted with the 2 litre 8v engine which im guessing is exactly the same as the golf gti 8v?
the car was a bit jerky when driving at nearly closed throttle positions, so i cleaned the t/b out and that caused the revs to increase to around 2000 rpm, which i put down to the idle being controlled by a stepper motor which has to be reset, so i took it to a mate who work in a garage and he tried to reset it but claimed he couldnt clear the fault codes or reset the throttle body. so we are now stuck with an idle that varies from 1000 to about 1400.
my mate reckons it need a new throttle body, but i doubt this as it has only a stepper motor motor on it and a throttle position sensor (in other words a potentiometer) both of which must be working for the car to drive surely?
what are the common bits to swap out, does it have any effect on mpg and are they any other throttle bodies from other vag cars that will fit

To reset the throttle body you have to just unplug the battery for a while so the ecu forgets its settings, then plug it back on, and turn the ignition on but dont start the car, and it will sort it self out.
Will be able to hear it messing about, and reseting its values. Then when you take it for a drive it will work it out for itself.
As for fault codes, you need to plug it into the obd2 port, where that his on your conversion.

i know how to reset etc. and like i said, ive got a buddy who has access to vagcom to reset it properly, but the problem is that it wont reset, or at least thats what he claimed. thanks for the fast reply though mikester
the car isnt a conversion, its the 2.0 avantgarde cabriolet, but from what i can tell it looks much the same as a 2 litre 8valve gti engine.
i might try and get one of the other lads with vagcom on my local vw forum to have a look it as im not 100% sure my other mate knows exactly what he is doing

I've got a 2.0 8v advantgard and was considering cleaning my throttle body so i'd appreciate any info you manage to get. Mine sometimes dies when the throttle is closed and coming to a stop.

have you refixed all the breather/vacuum hoses after cleaning the trottle body? And checked they are free flowing?
-
i didnt touch the vacuum pipes. just removed the hose going to the t/b.
so are there any bigger throttle bodies people fit (im more of a polo nut so dont know so much about the golfs, but a common mod on the mk3 polos is to fit the larger throttle body from spi golfs, just wondering if anything similar can be done with the golf mpi ones for example could a vr6 throttle body be used instead?)

look into air mass sensor they can cause these prob's , and if it is this try and get a second hand one as they are not cheap.
good luck Nic

I'm also having the same issues!
Revs bounce around inbetween 1000 & 2000!! Very annoying, especially in traffic lol

I looked into the fault with mine and started with the MAF sensor which was ok, I then remove all the breather pipes and flushed with Gunk and then soapy water and finally cleaned the throttle body which did have a varnish type covering. All back together and running sweet as a nut.
