Title: Collected today
Post by: gossa on 27 June 2009, 21:14
Got mine today, very sweet, red 5 door with 18's and winter pack.

As I thought, don't miss the leather I had in my Scirrocco, or the dsg, or the touchy screeny stereo. Don't also miss crunching down to get in or needing a 10ft gap to open the doors.

Will crack on up to GTI Inters tomorrow and will post some pics and thoughts. So far though, very impressed.

You had a Scirocco and now a mk6?  I wish I was Mr Moneybags

I want to see pictures too!

Give a fella a chance! Not great pics but they'll do for today.  I got the Scirocco in November, lovely car but got another sprog on the way so needed something bigger plus there were things about the rocco i never liked, such as the ludicrous gap between the tyres and the arches. I prefer the Golf even though I've bought it more more 'practical' reasons.

This was my 'rocco, part x'd today, did 12000 miles in six months and lost £1225 on it.

I'm not knocking it because i've moved on but I don't think you should have to lower a £25K sports coupe from factory spec, the gap on the GTI is perfect.

Oh, wasn't being arsey about mateys comment there, just clarifying that I don't have a garage full of toys! In fact i don't even have a garage, just a stoney car park!

Congrats on the new arrival. It's amazing how many people are trading in their new Sciroccos for the GTI and most seem to be saying the same as you: looks good, but too small inside.

Looks

I found the same with the rocco too. I just didnt feel the 2 door compromise was justified. nice car but just a couple of things about it annoyed me. probably because for a new car it was a little too similar to the mk5. They still manage to look  though!

Ok people, just did 350 odd miles up to GTI International and back so thought I'd give you some feedback on the car, and my thoughts against the Scirocco that I've traded away from.

So first off, I got the short straw, my car came with the Dunlops but I gotta say today they felt pretty good so i'm not bothered. The car was awesome today, it's quick enough, pulls well through the gear range and goes round roundabouts very well.  All together i'm very impressed.

So, getting in! The Roc was a pain in the arse with it's long slabby doors and low roof and high seat bolsters, the Golf is much more user friendly. Inside the GTI seats are narrower, they hug the torso more, in fact a tad too much in my view but i'm suffering middle aged spread!  Interior wise I prefer the Roc a bit as it has some nice shapes and shiny bits, apart from the steering wheel the GTI is a bit bland inside and I found accessing the drivers door pockets today almost impossible, you need to be double jointed!  However there are plenty of extra features that I prefer, sunglass holder, covered cup holder, but most of all,  the height adjuster on the seatbelt.  There wasn't one on the Roc an it bloody chaffed my neck like hell.

I went for a manual and this was the right choice for me, my roc was a DSG and even though the DSG is amazingly smooth and efficient, I ended up driving it in auto most of the time and that dulled the experience a bit. I got stuck in a monster traffic jam on the M1 today for ages and thought that would be where I'd regret not choosing DSG again but the clutch is very light and it wasn't a chore at all.

I also didn't get a sun roof and am not bothered as the cabin is much bigger and airier than the Roc, I wouldn't like the Roc without a sunroof, when I pulled the cover over mine it felt quite claustrophobic.

Drivewise the Rocco feels a little go-kartish in comparison to the Golf but today I noticed that the Golf doesn't understeer or suffer from as much torque steer as the Scirocco, a pleasant surprise, I think the Roc sits too high anyway, it should be lower, if no other reason than to hide the ghastly gap between the tyre and arch.  The Scirocco is sharper to drive but marginally and offset by the understeer and torque steer, I'd but my balls on the line to say (for me) the Golf is a better drive.  I think the Scirocco lowered on a track would be an awesome tool though.

Fuel consumption today was interesting, driving up from Poole I left early and was 'eager' to say the least but not going mad. I got through all the fuel in 290miles! Hmmm, not good so on the way back I drove at a steady 70-80mph, approx 3000 rpm and the range was showing a potential of 480miles on that tank so the golf seems more sensitive to the throttle.

That's it for now, i'm sure i'll think of more for later. Don't get me wrong, the Scirocco was a great car but for me the GTI has more to offer.

Gossa, did you opt for ACC and what's your view on seeing that you've already had it on the rocco?  I didnt go for it on my order but still could change my mind before the order goes to production.

Personally i found the ACC brilliant. Just not £700 brilliant. Should have been std imo

I havent driven the gti

The rocc just seemed to hug the corners really well even in the damp... and would even say comparable to the R. the problem i found was the torque steer and wheel spin when trying to get the power down. other than that its low stance makes it handle well.

I know the MK6 is supposed to deal with some of these issues to a degree... but i know it will be a long time before I forget I have the comfort of AWD.

Ah yes, forgot to mention it, didn't buy it, don't miss it.  On the Scirocco I very rarely drove it in sport as you could feel every lump exaggerated but I drove it in normal or comfort for cruising.  If it came for free on the GTI then I would use it but I wouldn't pay for it,  the gains are minimal.  If I was driving long motorway miles I might choose it for the comfort setting, The GTI with the 18's is firm no doubt, you can feel the bumps.

The cost of these options for me are just money for little gain that you'll never see back:
510 head unit: Touch screen buttons but more better function or sound, not money well spent.
DSG: Sweet box no doubt but I prefer the feel of the manual.
Leather: Well, half vinyl in the Roc anyway, not bothered at all, sweaty in summer, cold in winter (without winter pack).

Each to their own but I really don't miss all that stuff I had on the Roc, I prefer the cheaper standard options.

In terms of straight line power I'd say the two cars would be equally matched, maybe the Roc would be a nats chaff quicker but yes matey there is right, it scrabbles to get the power down and the understeer and torque steer when overtaking make you feel that VW didn't quite get it 100% right first time. The Roc is lower, wider and really does feel like it's on rails on the tight road but the GTI feels like it delivers the power more efficiently, he steering feels more sorted even though the Rocco's shape and size dictate that it should corner better. Both great cars, an AWD Scirocco would be awesome!

When I first test drove the Golf, the car I drove felt much slower than the Roc but in hindsight, the Roc just feels more frantic therefore quicker but the reality is they are very close.

^^ agree with you there gossa. What i would have paid for as options on the MK5 are now std on the MK6.

I would recommend the RNS510 though!! I paid £750 for it almost a years ago and will be moving with me to the MK6. Great bit of kit

I know what you mean, it's cool to have the touchscreen but the 310 has the same functions, even the ipod track come up on the display.  I was determined with this car to not buy anything I didn't really want and I only wanted the 18's. I've got the winter pack  because that was on the car that was available.

If i do get bored, I'll pick a 510 up.  I have never wanted satnav, I can read a map........

Its the 30gb HD that does it for me. i used to hav CDs flying all over the place. Now I can ram 20 albums on one dvd. Saves weight too... think of it as a performance mod!!

The sat nav bit I only really use for speed cameras when i am somewhere new or to cut through streets when there is traffic and I can see a way through. Which is time saving so also classed as a performance mod

Agreed: the Mk VI is the first Golf I have really liked the look of since the Mk I. Still don't like the rear that much, but the front is excellent.

Yep the same as the scirocco, scroll through on the steering wheel, the artist and track come up on the MDI and the head unit.
