While sticking my head under the bonnet today I noticed this 'hole' in the top of the (I'm assuming) gearbox. You can actually see (what again I'm taking a stab at is) the flywheel or some other damn big cog. Do other (manual) GTI's have this open or is there supposed to be some sort of plug over it?
You can see it looking in from the battery side down towards the engine / gearbox area.

I would be obliged if someone could maybe check?

I know on SAABs they have inspection holes for the gearbox. Maybe this is the same?
-
Maybe... would be interested to hear if its the same on everyone elses...
I couldn't see because of the sunlight and shadows but in the photo the 'damn big cog' looks a little corroded. I know it wasn't like that when I stopped the car this morning and was having a nose about. :undecided:

No mine is covered. Its not even a plug - looks very sealed.
Did take some pics mate but can't find my lead for the camera I'm afraid!
-
Much appreciated, thanks for that. Its going in for a service on Friday so I'll mention it then. Seems I've been driving about like this for the last year so hopefully another few days wont hurt :undecided:

Found the lead!
Here you go...

Hmm well its clearly not that something has fallen out of mine. Yours looks like a completely - newer - design. Mine's a very early 05 with the AXX engine. Not sure what the gearbox code is. I presume yours is newer BWA?
I still suspect that its not supposed to be like that. Then again there aren't any threads or lips or anything for a plug to sit in. Anyone else with an early one willing to have a look?
Don't want my damn big cog getting rusty
Thanks for taking those photo's mate
-
No mine's apparently the AXX engine - 55 plate. Yeah it looked very different to yours, I expected to see some kind of plug or cover, but its pretty flush, no kind of opening there at as far as I can see.
Perhaps different gear boxes? I have no idea at this point!
No problems at all.... I have been very very bored today and it at least gave me something to do :D
-
Mine is an 05 GTI engine code AXX and have the very same hole. Did ask VW along time ago and they said it was ment to be like that.

Thats reassuring - but a bit odd at the same time. Thanks for that.

It looks like the view hole for the mechanic to get Top dead centre if needs be,the ring/cog is the starter ring, the starter motor connects to this and turns the engine over.
One of the teeth will have a red mark on it.
Should have a little rubber plug though.
Chris.

^What he said. Timing mark quite possibly. (tho if it was a Saxo which it isn't- TDC sensor)
-
What they said  I have seen that on other cars, i havent got my 5 anymore or i'd have a look. I'm more confused about the cars on here where its totally flush??

That is fine and dandy. Just an inspection hole for starter ring gear on the flywheel.

Its good to hear that from the oracle. Welcome back T_T
-
Call off the search party ! We found him :D
-
Yay, welcome back T_T!!!!

Mine's got a little rubber bung with a bit that sticks out the top so you can remove easily in that hole!!
HTH Sam

Thanks! I thought it was a bit odd that it was just open like that. I'll make sure its replaced on Friday.

im no mechanic but i expect that is for timing the engine up

I can see the reason why there is a 'hole' there now but I was / am a bit suspicious that its just open to the elements like that. Its at the mercy of any spray that makes it through the grill or splashes from under the car and that cant be good / right.
Sambo has confirmed that there should be a rubber plug there so I'll point this out tomorrow when I get it serviced

The rubber plug that should be covering that hole is part no
