Been using my mates slr lately and really got into it! so thought i may aswell get my own but didnt want to get an amazin slr to start off with thought id start at the bottom and work my way up. anywhoo cant wait to get it and start taking some shots, i realise its gonna take a while for me to get the knack to get a good shot but im sure il get there in the end lol. Just thought id give you all a heads up as il no doubt be asking a million questions!

You cant go far wrong with a nikon.
Great lenses, good sturdy cameras too. Not used a d40 myself, but used to be pro in the 'olden days' before digital cameras (lol) and always used nikon (film) slr's - I still use them now and one of 'ems so old its almost antique - I got it 20 yrs ago, (2nd hand then) but it just goes on working and getting the shots!
Remember, its not the equipment, its the way you use it that counts - and practice makes perfect
I look forward to seeing your shots.

the thing i was told by my teacher when i was at sixth form was, nikon's lenses are more inclined towards still photography(e.g. portraits, macro etc) whereas canon are more towards movement(e.g. sports, motor racing etc).

granted both can do either of them but thats generally how they are judged.

ow and leica lens's are pretty much the don

when you go for a tripod get the best you can afford - it will last for donkeys if its a good solid one -remember its gonna take a lot of rough handling over the years!
Mines way over 20 years old, and getting a bit rough looking but it's still holding up

Its been a long time since I bought one, but Manfrotto and Slik were always the top dogs - there may well be more on the market now  :undecided:
I have a 'Slik' as. the Manfrottos were always very heavy and I needed one I could carry easily

I would suggest you do as much research via mags/net/word of mouth as possible and then when you go to buy check it out thoroughly before handing over your money!
You will need one with a fully rotating pan and tilt head, and preferably a good central extension in addition to leg extensions - take it up to full height and check how solid it feels when its fully extended. a good one should stand firm, check that its got rubber feet as well as little spikes for solidity on any ground surface - thats about all I can tell you atm ... hope it helps.
Some of the other guys may well have makes they can recommend
