Been having a couple of intermittent problems recently...
the exhaust system/lambda sensor light will come on every couple of weeks or so and will disappear after a day or two.
Also the engine will turn over when i try to start but won't kick in unless i give it some gas. again, this only happens maybe every couple of weeks (not necessarily at the same time though!).
It's also going through sh!tloads of oil.
No idea if any of these problems are connected but wondered if anyone with more of a clue than me had any suggestions?

That 2.0 8v lump drinks oil like it does petrol so I wouldn't think thats a problem, just a characteristic of the engine. I went through loads of oil in my MK4. Your best bet is to get it stuck onto VAGCOM and have the fault codes read out and take it from there really. Could be a whole number of things, the fault codes will point you in the right direction.
-
Cheers it's going in for it's MOT next week so I'll ask them to check it over.
Just want to brace myself for the bad news!
-
sounds like you got a faulty lambda sensor then!
depending on your engine code it will be either pre-cat or post cat. When you look at it though double check the wiring as this can go brittle and cause the same symptoms as a knackered sensor. I've known a few people to replace the sensor only for it to still run the same as its actually the wiring thats caused the fault
-
on the 2.0 one is on the exhaust manifold the other is in the cat
-
Any idea if that's expensive to replace?
-
budget about £80 each for the sensors (ebay, genuine Bosch) not that hard to change yourself
-
i got mine plugged in moday night and had one fault code which was the bank 1 O2 sensor, i looked under the vehicle at work and there was only one sensor which was just before the cat, is there one on the maifold on the 1.8 20v Non turbo.I had a quick look today and couldnt see one any where
Ive ordered the sensor which was supposed to be £95+vat but due to the joys of me working in a garage i got it ordered up for £60+vat. But appaerntly if there are two then they will both the same.

Im having the same things happening to mine. Its going back to the dealer for them to check it out. I'll keep you posted and let you know what the outcome is.

got mine all changed today, car is now perfecto lol. Was only 1 lamba sensor on my 1.8 20v  Just before the cat, nice and easy to get to and change. Had to get the old lamba glowing cheery red though to get it out
-
Was it actually causing you any noticeable problems, alex160?
Other than the fault code that is.
-
yea was mate, i had very rich exhaust fumes, rough idel sometimes and general poor running. It is all ok at the mo and fuel comsumption had improved by 5mpg overall.

Ok had my MOT yesterday and got them to check out the fault codes while it was in. Only 1 fault...
P0116 engine coolant temp sensor circuit range/performance prob
Doesn't seem to be anything that relates to the lambda sensor!!
would surely be something there if i've had a warning light on...faulty light maybe?
The faults have been cleared so i'll keep an eye on it...
