The chaps who organise the Prept meet at brands hatch are trying to sort out some reaonably priced short bursts out on the track on the same night as the meet.
Thought this might interest a few folks on here. Thread is on E38 though which you have to be registered to read.

excellent! although 'pay per lap' would be sh!t and a waste of time. would also attract too many slow cars who are just in it for the 'experience' and will hold the proper cars up. i hope they do it as an evening session like their other days
-
I think it's more aimed at track virgins who want to crawl round in their show cars but thought some peeps on here might like to give it a go.
Dpepending on how it goes I'll book an afternoon off and go along if only to blow the show cars into the weeds with my shed, mwahahahahah!
nick
-
haha, i need to get mine on its wheels again and get involved
sounds like the perfect day for dh, he might be able to overtake someone!
-
i think its so that you dont have to pay the £100 or whatever it is for the whole night. you can pay £25 for 20mins so that you can see if you like it or not...
-
sounds like the perfect day for dh, he might be able to overtake someone!
Yes, it's true I am VERY slow on road and on track.
If I get round to putting the Syncro on the road this year I might go along to bathe in the humiliation.
-
Id love to send mine around as I'm there every month. I just need someone to sponsor me with new tyres and brakes please.
Im open to offers . . . . :D
Although 20 minutes sounds tempting. NO , MUST, NOT, BREAK, CAR !!! (/remembers clutch smell from the Pod)
-
As long as your smooth and don't go mental Alan you won't cook your brakes, muller your clutch or remove that much tread from your tyres.
Nick
-
Tempting. . . let us know if your going to come on down. I reckon I could talk Bav and Barry into it :D
-
santa pod does more damage to your car than trackdays do, you just wear out more consumables on track
-
Once it's all sorted with costs etc I'll look at booking the afternoon off and go from there. I'll keep ya posted.
nick
-

Indeed, drag strips are super grippy which is what destroys clutches and gear boxes.
20 mins on Brands hatch is not going to be much more wear and tear than a few weeks of hooning about on public roads.
nick
-
While I think that driving on a track does use *somewhat* more in the way of consumables than driving on a road (although I must stress that I take it real easy and hold traffic up on both) I think there is an awful lot of unnecessary worrying about wear to the car here and more so on E38.
As Nick's said - Santa Pod is super-grippy, but people are also doing standing starts on it - huge loads on their cars and lots of resultant failures.
The second biggest risk with a track day is not mechanical failures, it's talent failures, which can and do occur at speed and when trying to change direction (unlike on a strip).
To be totally honest, if you can't afford to risk what you have by taking it on a track, then don't. These short sessions are more likely to tempt people with VERY poorly prepared cars, which are far more likely to fail, or vomit fluids on the track.
The other people out there on a track are your biggest risk, second only to going out and finding your talent bucket unexpectedly empty mid-bend.
That said, I took my Passat out for a lap of the 'ring with the kids and wife in it and I was using it as the tow car on that trip, too. Eggs? Basket? Eh? That was only when the track was quiet and I'd just come back from a previous risk, so had a pretty good idea about what was going on out there. Still, not something I'd be keen to do again!
-

Lol. u know be so well...
...if my car wernt still a boat i'd be very very very tempted lol
-
Well it's confirmed as 26th August. £25 for a 20 min session or £99 for the whole evening.
I'll be booking a half day and heading down me thinks. I'll probably just splash out on 2 sessions as I'll want to do some photography as well while I'm there.
Nick
-
sucks that its a novice evening.
i might book a session though and hope they dont check the reg's for people who have driven there more than twice
-
From what I understood they had to set it up as one but regulars are welcome to.
nick
-
ill give them a ring. id like to do the whole evening really, its not often theres a vw only trackday!
-
Quote from original forum
"100 odd is a lot to take the car for a spin round a track because none of ours are really up to the job. After about three decent laps even uprated brakes that we run on our daily / show cars will start to fade and we dont generally want to be pushing our cars that hard for lap after lap (speaking for the majority i think?)"
Well the money he paid for his uprated brakes was a good investment then !!
If you don't want to go then don't go - don't make up stupid excuses.
10 minutes on E38 to read the original thread was enough for me.

Mate you should know me better by now! You do not have to talk me into anything concerning track time of any description! i am definately up for doing a couple of sessions. Wouldnt want to do all evening because moneys too tight and want to soak up the atmosphere and take some pics!
Im too tired to make an account on e38 tonight so will do it tommorow to read about it all.
When can we book it?
-
T'S HAPPENING WE HAVE CONFIRMATION!!!!!!
There will be limited numbers on the evening so this really will be a first come forst servred event. Please book early on the links below as payment on the night is not an option.
The usual Prept night attractions will be running alongside this event so expect some spectators for added pressure laugh.gif
The Bar will be open for food drink and TV etc but have a feeling the Pit lane will be where the fun is at.
Details are....
Brands Hatch, Kent, DA3 8NG
Date • Wednesday August 26th,
Time • 4.30pm through to 8.30pm
Price • Full evening with 4.30 through to 8.30ish £99
• Taster session will be £25 for 20 minutes and you may re-enter if you wish or book 2 tasters so 40 minutes for £50 etc. This way you can get a feel for the experience and do as many laps you feel fit or as little as 1 lap to if you wish. All you will need is your driving license and if you want to take a passenger round with you an additional fee of £10 will be charged.
We will be running a rolling briefing session set up so you don't have to be there as early as 4.30 and the last briefing at 6.40pm. Helmet hire will be available on the day also at a charge of £10 unless you can supply your own wink.gif .
Full evening link for booking.....
http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/trackday...de=preptfulleve
And taster session booking.....
http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/trackday...ode=prepttaster
You will notice that the taster sessions come under the Novice catogory. This was the easiest way to implement it for our market with the idea that a majority of interest would come from cars that are well looked after by enthusiasts.
I'll keep you updated on numbers etc but if you do have any questions please contact Motorsportvision though the links above.
Many thanks and hope to see some nice cars doing what they do best, being driven smile.gif
Ryan

-
May get there for when all these chaps get onto the circuit I think.
-
This still happening?
-
Yeah should be, I still haven't booked my slots as I'm waiting to find out about my job and to see if I can get the Golf through an MOT in time!
Nick
-
according to that thread on e38 if you have booked the whole evening its open pitlane 5.30 - 8.00! i was expecting 4 sessions of 20 mins so thats a massive bonus
-

Failure to prepare, is preparing to fail ;)
-
8 days to go!! yeeaaahhhh boi
-
What car you going to be in? Will keep an eye out :)
-
He'll be in the Black MKII upsetting all the so called faster cars out there.
I'm really not sure I'm gonna make it now. Having spent over £500 on essential MOT car stuff this month money is a little tight to put it mildly!
nick
-
dont build it up! im gonna look like a tit now when i get overtaken
you still gonna come and watch nick? if you get there before it starts and get sound tested we can swap the sticker over onto yours for a few laps :afro:
-
I'll try and at least get down in the Rado for a watching session as I have the afternoon booked off work. I'll see how the finances look next week and if I can get the Golf a ticket before next wednesday and then decide what to do.
nick
-
i would say have a go in mine but i dont think your feet will reach the pedals now the seats fixed
-
Ha ha I could glue some blocks of wood on me shoes! Can you Dad still drive it?
Nick
-
nope too short
-
Is that not going to be an issue with sharing trackday costs?
-
hes only chipped in for one so far, its not a regular thing
ill try and convince him to use his tt for a session, should be funny!
-
Dam only 8 days! this came round quick!
Dan
-
Golf's booked in for an MOT on tuesday so fingers crossed I'll be in that. If not the Rado will just have to whore it in the car park.
Nick
-
so who else off here has booked tracktime?
-
im sorry to ask but i not seen dates or times or prices or anything like that so im gonna be thick and write here to ask. wat insurance do we need and wat gear? ( helmets suits ) all that sort of biz
-
insurance is optional, you need a helmet and your license. helmets are rentable if you dont have one
http://www.clubmsv.com/car-home/event-details.aspx?productid=139
uh oh its gonna be raining

And a long sleeved top if Brands is like other tracks I've been on.
Only the early sessions left to book on as well. Hope the Golf passes tomorrow morning and I can book myself on the 2nd one.
Nick
-
t shirts are fine, you only need long sleeves in open top cars at brands
-
Rain? Arrrggghhh my wets are almost slicks and I don't have £200 kicking about for a new set till later in the year :-(
Nick
-
you'll just be having more fun! turn in oversteer
-
It's more the getting home having mullered them round the track and getting nicked for tread I'm worried about!
Nick
-
Keep the faith, the rain will stay away.
/does sun dance.
-

Bring a spare set of road legal ones?! Be plenty of hands around to put 'em on.

Nick

I've got two sets of wheels.
1 set of R888 cut slicks
1 set of Yoko Standard road tyres (for the wet)
Problem is the road tyres are on the legal limit and 1 session round Brands will kill them. I can't then drive home on the cut slicks if it's still raining!
If it's dry I can run the cuts and then pop the roads back on for the journey = Win!

Ah that makes more sense now.
-
but if its wet enough for wets you shouldnt wear them that much? you could use the r888's unless it really pours down
anyway, met office is now saying no rain
-
Well the Golf passed the MOT but I'm skinter than I thought. I'm still coming but in the Rado as I need to save my tyres, brakes and any possible breakages for my fully paid up trackday at Silverstone on Tuesday.
Nick
-
R888's are great in the wet  Had them on my last car!
-
Until you hit standing water on a motorway at 80! Problem with the MKII is it's very light and little downforce to push the tyres through the water.
nick
-
does a mk2/brick have any downforce
r888's suck on the motorway, you get pulled all over the place in the lorry tracks. you have to be a twit and hog the middle lane

And there well noisy lol Not that that bothers people like us!
Oh and by the way they have confirmed tonight that the karting circuit will be open aswel £10 for 10 mins!
-
Now that's tempting!
nick
-
That sure is tempting!
-
i have mixed feelings on tonight
was very dissapointed in the fact that a full evening session meant 3x20minute sessions for £99 when you could book individual sessions for £25 each. work that out.....
the standard of driving was pretty appauling tbh, noone looked in their mirrors or used their indicators or got out of the way when i was passing slower cars, and when they did get out of the way i found them next to me in the corner because they hadnt backed off!
there was also a lack of golfs on this trackday organised as a vw event, i think i counted 6 or 7 vw's. the rest were in the carpark outside the circuit wanking over their multi coloured wheels. very dissapointing
on the plus side the car feels very good with its stiffer chassis. very pleased with it! the weather stayed good despite forecasts of rain and i got to use the r888's all evening
then to top it off my exhaust cracked in the middle and fell off on the way home, and had to limp it home for 20 miles, unsilenced. my ears are still ringing lol
was good to meet a few guys off here though, hope you enjoyed your passenger ride tjg
-
I thought it sounded a bit fruitier on the last session you did. What a bummer!
Pics are in the photography section.
Nick
-
just had a goosey at them, they look good mate!
how did your ones in the traffic turn out? lol
-
Ha ha they're rubbish!
You going to be Ok for a zorst for tuesday?
nick
-
it just needs a straight bit of pipe with one end flared so ill see who sells it tomorrow. wont take long to fit so i should be good for silverstone
-

Was an OK meet overall. It was nice to at least see some cars out on track any way.
Think I saw alanD whilst I was there, but not sure. Also saw a nice green mk2 with some white wheels (think ats cups?) that i know is a member on here also.
Shame on the way back, the back end stepped out on my car. I now have an egg shaped front left wheel after ploughing into a curb! Big bummer :( Could have been a whole lot worse...

It's ok I pointed your car out Nick to everyone, but couldn't find you when you were actually up there. We left pretty early this time around, weather was cack, not too many great cars either.

I wish I could get down to the locations the pro's are able to use. It's really hard getting good shots when there are only 2 places to stand on a trackday when the rest of the stands are closed. Shooting through fencing is such a PITA!
Nick
-
if you want better positions drive back towards the entrance, go left before the barriers and park behind druids. you can walk round the whole circuit then. i think its called south bank parking
-
Ah cool, I'll try that next time although hopefully I'll actually be doing some driving next time I'm at Brands and not just watching.

Thing is a lot of the pro's shots are balls TBH. They never allow any space for the surroundings in their shots, so the picture's generally pretty shat, unless you just want a big picture of your car going somewhere on 'any racetrack'.
This is what I'd class as a good track photo:

Yeah that's cool shot. it also kinda reaffirms what I sadi as well. That was clearly taken right down at track level with no fencing in the way. Trying to get that kinda shot when your stood several meters above the track with a thick fence in the way is near enough impossible.
I agree though the pro shots that you pay for at these things are always very dull. It's generally just your car taking up the middle of the frame with little background to place it anywhere significant. I was quite impressed with the guys that shot the 928 day at combe though. They got a few nice shots looking down the circuit so you had your own car in the foreground and then the circuit and other cars rolling out behind which added some of the atmosphere of the day in.

Dam wished I'd gone, friend of mine lives 5 minutes from brands so could have stayed at his!
How much was it per lap?
-
£25 for a 20 min taster session. They'll probably be doing another night like wednesday in the spring.
