Title: Spot the Problem - GGGRRRRRrrrrrrrrrr
Post by: JC on 21 June 2009, 09:41
Right then, the " Noise " from the top of my engine is now at the point that before I spend OWT else on her, it needs sorting,

so today i got up  before my Fathers Day Breakfast and stripped her down to see what i could see.

Opend up the heart of the old girl, and there was nothing obvious

then i noticed the ISSUE  seems the " top end rebuild " just before i bought the car really was CR@P

So those that can spot the " problem " can you advise me

1, would this cause a " cammy rattle / knock )

2, where to go from here / what to do.

Thanks in advance

possibly, im not sure how different the caps can be

swap them over and cross your fingers! hopefully theres no damage under there as the head is softer than the cams  :undecided:

has it always been noisey since you have owned it then?

did think about that,

but she is all rebuilt now,

but i do have a spare lump that i could swap everything over from  :lipsrsealed: and replace the lifters and cambelt at the same time

were there any marks/scoring on the caps?

thinking about it if its only just started making a niose thats probably not the problem. it would be noisy straight after the rebuild and get quieter as the cam caps are 'reshaped'

bearings and the caps are paired for a reason. the problem is the damage has more then likely been done now.

 that was my thinking when i saw the numbers - wishful thinking was trying to tell me otherwise

the best thing to do is swap the stuff you have from your spare engine into this car check the bearings on the old one first might be worth getting a new set for peace of mind though. any damage to the camshaft.

New set? IIRC they can't be swapped out as they are machined unique to each head, its a new head affair if the cam caps are damaged.

I did fix it for you ...

Check what's going on with plasti-gauge.

Then act on actual information.

just lift them and look that'll soon tell you.

you can have the heads tunnel bored and retrofit shells to them if your keen but not worth it on std heads

The cap nuts are sensitve to torque.  Perhaps a re-torque might help?

Whats the chain like?

Is is definitely nothing to do with the tappets?

I know I wouldn't - moving them around in the first place can't have helped, moving them back will be even worse.

well i have succeedied inf cuking my back doing this today, so

1, i wont be doing owt on the car

2, it will have to come apart one way or the other  cos if its not that then it is the lifters

I would leave they as they are, could cause more damage swapping them back.

right then -

Worse case, its the lifters, and I DONT get them done ? what could happen. I might just run the lump into the ground as the CHEAPEST option

You get embarrassed driving round with a car that sounds like a ford, worse case the cam gets damaged from constantly slapping the tappet heads.

remove camshafts,  beat person who reconditioned head round the head with camshafts.   then find and kill a mk3 16v so it can be used as an organ donor

You say you have another engine?? This is what I would do.
Remove the oil filter from the engine that is presently in the car and carefully cut it open. Look at the filter element for signs of metal. White metal, as long as there is not much, would probably be from the head where the mismatched caps have worn. Any ferrous metal, which is attracted by a magnet means that something may have gone through the the oil pump.
If all is well, then remove the head from your spare engine and give it a bit of a service, ie, lap the valves in, fit new valve guide seals and give it a decoke. If funds can stretch that far, give the face of the head a light skim, purely to reface it and take out any deformations rather than to give it any performance gains.
Then fit to existing engine and reap the benefits of your labours. If you need a helping hand, P.M me. But there is no need to put the car into a garage and hand over money when help is at hand.
This need only cost you a head gasket set, and some time. If you can, a new set of followers and a reskim would be beneficial to round off a decent job.

I think I still have the Toledo 2.0 Sport springs lying around at mine.  These were on my car until a couple of weeks ago.

If your front end's too high, they might be a (free) solution.

If you'd cracked into this a few weeks ago I could have helped more..... bit screwed at the moment though

well i had an listening jobby onto the top of the engine, a METALIC sound is a lot more prominent above the " perhaps " incorrectly fitted camcovers.

then someone mentioned Oilways, and are they beng fed correctly, or are the covers seated properly,

so, wednesday nights job is " swap them over "
