Title: 1.9 TDi estate project coming on!
Post by: tomstickland on 21 June 2009, 01:00
I've spent the last month breaking up my BMW E30.

In its place I bought a Mk3 Golf 1.9 TDi estate. I needed a car in a hurry and this was the first thing I found that was suitable.

Well, after fitting some decent tyres to it, I drove it quite hard (laughing at the comedy lean angle on corners)and the suspension ripped itself to bits.

So I've just replaced all the bushes and ordered a spring/damper -40mm kit. Got some 15" steel wheels ready to go with some half decent tyres.

A few other bits of maintenance done.

We fitted a new clutch today. Quite an involving job.

Well, I took the car out for a 100 mile trip today and I'm really chuffed.
It feels really nice to drive.
The engine seems to be pulling harder than before. I've no idea why, maybe we put it back together better than it had been before.

Because the engine seems quite happy pulling from 1500 round to 4000 rpm and the handling is nice and neutral with a hint of lift off oversteer  you can actually carry quite a lot of speed on twisty roads. Just keep it hustling along.
Very amusing when there are two wheel barrows and a load of tools in the back. Though I wouldn't like to think about what would happen if the car was to come off the road with those heavy items in the back.

The springs and dampers should arrive on Monday morning. Can't wait to get the 15" wheels on.

Fair play, VW did a good job with the Mk3.

I've just got back from a 1,750 mile trip. Fuel economy has been an impressive 50mpg ish. I'm impressed by the engine, it's got enough go to allow decent speeds on motorways.

It was a right laugh on the track. The handling is rather understeer orientated. Totally benign really. Drive in, lift off, put some power back on and adjust until the front end is starting to cook the tyres.
I want to try disconnecting the front drop links to see if that helps. Ideally I'd add some more anti roll bar to the rear end.

I did actually overtake a few things. Funniest was  some sort of old TVR that I was gaining on. I suspect that the driver was a bit crap. Anyway, he then  span it backwards over the grass on an S bend right in front of me.

At one point some porsche driver was overtaking me round a corner, not leaving a huge amount of room, and I thought "oh well, if I don't make I'm not going to be too bothered when I crash into you."

Brakes worked well. Engine temperature didn't get above half way, despite foot to the floor and a really hot day.

I was getting round the circuit in around 11 and a half minutes.
