I had the squeak on my mk2 dude, guess what? its the plate that splits the upper and the lower springs. I just sprayed a load of WD40 every so often and it shut it up

A rattle from the rear will be the top mounts, mine was the same also worth checking your exhaust / axle beam clearance.

thanks guys

top mounts have been replaced and the exhaust / axle beam clearance its ok
cant be any trim as the car is stripped
will get car up on ramps today and have a good look under her..  failing that will get suspension out, check all nuts and bolts are ok and will try oil on the springs

its making me crazy

Were the new rear top mounts genuine or aftermarket.

cheap aftermarket mounts from e-bay mate

I had issue with the cheaper ones would start rattling after a week or so, try genuine ones they are not that more expensive.

I first thought it was top mounts, so I changed them for febi GSF units, it sorted it for a few days but came back (I realised while coilovers were off, I sprayed WD40 on them, so it was that what fixed it.

Try the spraying first, you don't have to remove the coilover, just remove the rear wheels.

didn't get chance to have a look today but have just been out and sprayed WD40 all over the springs
will go for drive in morning and see what happens (cant drive now had a few beers )

if that fails will get some genuine mounts ordered

Check for any loose brake calipers....

I had a rattle for ages and found out the brake caliper had come loose from the hub
