Title: Brake upgrade
Post by: green-blood on 19 June 2009, 15:51
I've been a bit underwhlemed by my valvers brakes, its a 96, the last of the pre-288 cars. I have always driven on my brakes, so to say, I like to have a firm peddle and confidence in my front end.

I have been looking out for a 288 setup but then a friend on an Irish VAG site let me know he was upgrading his Mk3 to a 312 set up and 16s.

So I bought his front end!!!!

288 drilled and grooved discs (ATE)
greenstuff pads
braided hoses

Twin pot calipers off of an S2 Audi coupe...

We replaced the rear with standard ATE discs, pads and new braided hoses and new bearings which have made a massive difference too

All finished off with ATE super blue racing fluid.

This all fits under my standard early gti 15s, now the rear needs bedding, the handbrake needs tightening and I will need to re-bleed next week but WOW

I hope he upgrades his car again soon, I cant wait to try those 312s on mine

PS - I'll take some pics when I do the rebleed...

thanks lads... I can only guess what a decent 312 set up feels like, but this is now superb, I realy love the extra bite and this is with part worn pads and discs... new pads and discs next summer I'd say and it will step up again... I love it

I love it more because it sits under my 15s...

i've just bought a set of twinn pots, and I cant see anyway that these would fit over 288mm discs, are you sure mate there not over the 280mm?

the carrier just doesnt reach its two fixing point.

cheers

you have to run 280 disks not sure which pads- i think they were s2's- Nav did this conversion and mentioned that he had some pad overhang but just about got away with it- overall he wasn't impressed and reverted, can't remember why
