Title: Mk2 - no constant live to stereo
Post by: jmsheahan on 19 June 2009, 11:28
Have just fitted a headunit to my mk2 8v using the wiring and plug already in there. It works fine but there seems to be no constant live to the stereo meaning it has no memory. The stereo won't work unless a key is in the ignition - ignition doesn't need to be on, just key in.

Any ideas as I'm not expert with electrics

Cheers

you need to run a feed from the thick red wire on the back of the fuse box as this is a 12v+ permanent supply
make sure you fit an inline fuse holder with a 10 amp fuse

thats rather strange, most mk2's have permanent live, just not ignition live?
most people just combine the perm/ign lives from the headunit to the one live from the car, that keeps memory etc working, just means you have to physically turn stereo off every time you turn car off!

usually the red and yellow wires on the harness from the head unit

This, but you can go straight to battery if you like. Imo it saves messing with the cars original wiring.
