I'm thinking about buying a 1994 Golf mk3 but I'm concerned about some rust on the trimming under the door. I've read that if it's not anything big and not within 30cm of a structural point it's fine. But this one seems to be within that distance. The question is is it big enough already to be worried about and if it would fail the next MOT. It seems solid enough but I have no idea how strict they are when it comes to rust.
This is how it looks:
Between the front and rear door:

Other side rear door:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The door can be as rusty as you like and still pass an mot as long as they aren't flapping about with jagged edges.
The rust you need to be concerned about is the rust on the sill below the doors in that pic. As long as you can't easily poke a screwdriver through it you'll be fine. However as soon as rust develops into a hole on the sill it's very likely to mean a failure.

It looks like someone sanded it back a while ago then left it untreated?
It doesnt look deep so i reckon it would pass.

hard to say really, the picture of the door is nothing that will pass, the sills on the other hand are different, they should pass unless you can stick a screwdriver through it (and the tester will try) it should pass.
the question you should be asking yourself is, if the car has this much rust that you can actually see, then how much is there that you cant see?
i would leave it well alone unless you can do the work yourself.
if you know someone who can do it for cheap, dont bother you will get a cheap job for cheap money.

Unless that car is CHEAP, I wouldn't touch it.

by cheap he means free...the rear arches look like the tin worm has attacked aswell in the last pic...IMO avoid it, put some more money in your budget and get one thats in better nic

if it is solid rust i.e you cant stick you finger through it then you can just sand it back to shiny metal and treat it with a rust cure i did my arch and sill today its easy, respraying tommorow thats gunna be the tricky bit
