hi im new on here so forgive me if im bringing up a subject that was thought to be buried.
ive got a mk2 8v gti 1990 engine code pb.
ive had it for bout 6months and i love it.
theres one thing that is now really annoying me.
the rev counter plays up sometimes well used to be sometimes but is getting more regular everytime it is used.
what happens is:
start it up and it will work fine and then if it is left to idle for a cuple of minutes the rev counter decides he is bored and does as he pleases, it will just randomly jump around all over the place, and sometimes it will be like this as soon as i start it up.
but...
if when this is happening you turn the igntion off then start it strate back up again it is fine. when the weather is bad raining etc it seems to happen more often tho.
i have checked the plug is in correctly on the back of the clocks and it is secure, i also checked that there was no water or like getting in behind the clocks and there was no leaks.
1) has any one else had this problem?
2) does any one know where the rev counter feed is?
any help would be much appreciated .

i get that problem when i turn the ignition on. the revs flick high up then settle down. Looks cool but i also need the cure :-\

I Believe the rev counter gets its signal from the coil, maybe you have a bad connection or moisture is getting in.
just a thought, worth a look
-
when the rev counter is boucning about is the engine speed bouncing about also?
or does the engine idle normal and its just the rev counter doing tricks?
-
sounds like a bad earth to me, but im no mechanic... might be worth finding the earth points and giving them a quick clean though.

everything is fine, engine idles fine speedo is fine other dash instruments are fien its just the rev counter that plays up!
doe sany one no where the earth points i need to give a clean are?
-
i would do as rob advises and check the signal coming from the coil. probablt just a dirty/copper corroded contact

ok will try that. wich connector on the coil is the feed for the rev counter?
