I need some advice please!

At some point over the summer I plan to have a day detailing my car, concentrating on getting the paintwork right. Since purchasing it I have not had much time so have just been using Auto Glym HD wax, with good results.

However, I have never had a go at claying and want to have a go at that (have read the guide) plus other bits.

My first question is, what do I use to wash it before I start detailing it i.e. to remove all the HD wax? I currently use AG bodywork conditioner.

Next question - I want to do quite a few steps, which order do I do them in? (have tried to put in a rough order).

Tar spot removal (AG Tar remover)
Clay
Machine polish
Jet Seal 109
CG 50/50

Is this the right order? Feel free to add any other steps.

Hi Jay,

Looks like you're on the right road there and some great products...  Jetseal 109 is superb stuff, never used 50/50though ... and the order you're doing it is fine..

Regarding removing old wax,  claying will remove some of it but not all, however your machine polisher will remove it all...

The shampoo you're using is fine - AG products have a good rep...

Only thing I'd say is let the Jetseal cure before adding anything on top...  at least 24hr,  also it's recommended to use 2x coats of Jetseal,  if you have the time use 3 coats ( it does make a difference )...


To prolong the finish and all the hard work you've put in,  it would be worth getting some Dodo Red Mist and apply that after every/everyother wash...

Good luck with the detail,  it'll be worth it...

i'm a big fan of bilt hamber autowash for the masses

i do however find AG tar remover excellent

wheels - try bilberry  :wink:

Depends on how much you're happy to spend.

Megs allpurpose cleaner at 1:4 dilution will strip anything and everything off. Claying and polishing will also remove any wax too.

Don't forget to clay the wheels and windows too. Plus some tyre dressing always goes down well.

Cheers for the advice. Already using the following products on the rest of the car:

Wheels - bilberry then HD wax
Tyres - AG tyre dressing
Windows - Carlack 68 glass sealant (this is f*cking excellent stuff!)
Trim - AG vinyl & trim

Just wanted to make sure I did everything in the right order on the bodywork - previously all I have done is polish then wax.

I would forget the AG tar remover, I found a while back that my car was covered in spots that are probably some kind of fence life product and it also had the usual dose of tar spots on it but when I used the AG tar remover it wasnt very good and was very hard work so I bought a gallon of Bilt Hamber Surfex HD.

At the momment I'm useing it at a dilution of 20% with water which gives me 5 gallons for £14 (AG tar remover is £6 for 325ml !) and so far there's nothing it wont get off the car and I've used it on every part of the car without any adverse effects, its amazing but you do have to polish or wax the car after use as it does strip every bit of last stage protection you may have on the car :smiley:
