Title: Power Steering
Post by: hobbes on 15 June 2009, 13:24
I have a problem with it....  Basically, the assistance is ok but when turning to the right is feels harder (less assisted) than when turning to the left?  Could this be something to do with the camber?

When i bought the car last year it had been lowered.  I have now taken this off and returned to normal ride height.  I was advised to have a geometry set up done once the new suspension was fitted.  So, off i went to my local Merityre in Farnham to have this done.  The assessed the cars' camber and toe-in on their computer and found both wheels were widely out.  After reviewing there manual for a mark 2 the advised they would not be able to correct the camber as a special vw only tool was required (i think he said it was tool 3270).

After correcting the offside tracking the camber corrected itself to within what they classed as limits.  However, when the tracking on the near side was corrected it did not self correct the camber.

I've tightened the power steering belt and when turning the wheel whilst stationary i can here the pump working.  Is it worth changing the power steering fluid and is this easy to do?

As for the camber, could this affect the steering as described above.  On a previous post someone advised that you just slacken off the two bottom strut bolts and adjust that way but can this be done by sight easily enough.  I did suggest this to the guy whom carried out the geometry but he said it would just bounce back again which on reflection I don't think is correct - surely if you tighten them properly they would stay as is....

Your thoughts/ideas would be appreciated.  I'm trying to get this car as perfect as i can and this is one of the few remaining niggles i have....

yeah thats how you set the camber, not quite sure what the guy was on about probably just couldnt be bothered to do it!  sometimes there isnt enough adjustment available, in this case special thinner bolts can be bought from VAG.  Unless something is bent though this shouldnt be a problem.

With a hard enough bump, I could imagine the strut being knocked out of alignment with the wheel bearing housing - its only 2 bolts with it held by friction.

Doing it by eye is a bit impossible, unless you have Terminator type vision, but what most people do is just loosen off the nuts, push the wheel bearing housing right in and pull the strut out - then tighten up. Trouble is, this will knock out the toe.

Take it to a proper 4WD alignment place and get the camber and toe setup correctly. Checkout www.alignmycar.co.uk
