Title: Is this normal for my wheels ?
Post by: luke0380 on 14 June 2009, 23:16
I get these , noticably on the back wheels  , should there be that much rust.

Also the wheel nuts, should they be that colour ?

The rust on the hub is quite common on the MK5's. Its an easy fix, just involves getting your hands slightly dirty.

There is a really good "How to" guide on MK5GolfGTi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?spamspamspam449) Forum. Just sign up and you can get to them under the "How to Guides/Troubleshooting" section.

As for the wheel nuts, they are just plastic cover's. The nuts are behind the plastic covers. From the picture, it looks like you've had the wheels refurbished????  :undecided: You can buy replacement covers from VW, which should tidy things up a bit.

Yep, typical rust on the disc hubs. Very VW - a cheap paint coating over something that should be much more substantial and long lasting.

Wheels off and silver Hammerite will do the trick.

Good old "rusty" bells - looks awful (mine car is the same).  Some people had them sprayed under warranty and others (like myself) were told it was "normal"!

Are you sure whoever had it before you has not sprayed the wheel nuts to match the rim? Looks like a bad job or it's starting to flake off?

The rust is caused by the brake dust that falls onto the hubs. This dust then rusts when it gets wet, and sticks onto the hub.
I have it on mine as well, but havent got round to doing anything about it yet! lol

What most people do is remove the wheel, then paint the hub with Hammerite Smooth Silver Metal Paint. This protects it from more rust, and you get a nice smooth silver finish.

Just doing mine this very moment!
I brought a pot of Hammerrite smooth in white because I WAS going to use a brush to paint it as overspray can happen so easy with a can, but then for some reason the Hammerrite smooth hasn't taken to it for some reason (maybe the brush as the paint was quite thick and sh!t looking, I'm not really sure).
Anyway So now I've taken the actual disc off instead and brushed off all the white crap to start again. Luckily I found a spray can in silver/chrome (rather keep it original now after seeing the white!). Now it's drying much better as theres no stroke marks and best off all it's getting sprayed no where near the car.
Pics to follow possibly.

Clean the center part of the disc with a wire brush then use silver hammerite.

Got fed up with my wheel nut caps always looking grubby!
Get a piece of wood, say 6" x 18"  ,buy some ordinary nuts ,I think ther'e 17 or 19mm  and silicone each nut to your wood.
Pull off wheel caps and place one on each nut, then get a spray can off satin black or colour of your choice !
You can then easily spray all the caps on your board ,after four hours they will be dry and ready to refit ,and your all kitted up to do them as soon as they get grubby again!!!

The reason the wheel nut covers go like that is from some of the alloy wheel cleaners that some dealers use. Just get some replacements and they will be fine as long as you don't spray them with anything acidic!!
