Title: Reverse Out... Need gear.
Post by: interex on 14 June 2009, 19:56
My reverse gear has gone out on my transmission,  I have a 97 Golf 2.0, 5spd, and I am looking for a supplier to get the parts to get it fixed.  My buddy can do the transmission for me, but his cost on the gear alone is over $250 and that's a little high if you ask me.

Anyone know of a place in the states, canada, or anywhere that has a replacement gear, that will be good to get this going?

if its going to cost that much for a gear, would it not be worth while just getting a re-con box, as that will also save hassle in the future when other components fail.

I can't find a transmission anywhere within 150 miles of me, and the ones I find on the salvage yard lookup site (car-parts.com) in working condition are more than $400.  There are many with reverse out, or making noise.   I've been watching on craigslist in my area to see if anyone has a junked golf or jetta I can get parts from, but this is quite difficult.

It seems that MK3s are rather rare in my part of the states.
