Title: Gearbox/clutch problem?
Post by: adubya on 14 June 2009, 13:47
This may be stupid question but here goes. I am having trouble changing gear on my mk3 golf gti 16v. It is mainly going from 1st to 2nd but does occasionally happen changing back into 1st. I have read a few things on the net saying it might be the linkage which would seem about right.
The only thing is when i release the clutch then apply it again it goes into gear fine. I've been told it has a hydraulic clutch so could this be the problem? Is there anyway i can check the clutch fluid as I can't see a resevoir or filler bung on the gearbox.
Any help would be much appreciated.

unfortunately there is no linkage system on the 16v as its all done by hydraulics and cable from the gear stick so that is not your answer so its either your clutch, gearbox or fluid it is possible the mechanism has started to wear however and you can replace it from the gear stick

Before you get charged £60 for a garage to have a guess, pull up your gear gaitor, and you will see the mechanism. Select gears etc and see if there is anything obvious.

i feel like such a twit now i have fixed the problem now its as smooth as a baby's bum to change but i found a wierd looking wire with a click button attached inside the gear selector which has snapped off i dont understand what this is :S (it looks like an immobilizer switch to start the car from inside but i haven't got a clue)
