Hey all, am looking for some advice and inspiration, I have got a 3 door 8 Valver, shiny shiny red  and Im looking for some coilovers and wheels for her.
First question is does anybody know of a good set of coilovers? Im looking to get this all sorted for Bugjam so I dont wanna get it wrong lol. The Mk4 boys I roll with all have FK Highsports and love em, I just wondered if anyone had these on their Mk2 or could recommend any? £400 would be my max really, which is roughly Highsport price, but if anyone can recommend any cheaper ones that are decent thats all good :)
Wheel wise I wanna get em just right and am not looking to spend a fortune, and Ive taken a shine to these bad boys
http://www.rimstyle.com/products/detail/?category=wheel_tyre_packages;type=ronal_r10_turbo_mb;manufacturer=ronal;model=392;id=ROR10MB1570704100372813010
Ronal R10s, anyone got an opinion on em?
Really appreciate advice y'all.
Oh and I might be selling a 16v Scorpion twin pipe exhaust, back box and mid section if anyone is interested. PM if so.

Well if you want adjustable hieght suspension and you have a budget like that then these are recomended http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pages/products/product_info.mhtml?product=3876990 (http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pages/products/product_info.mhtml?product=3876990) not had them myself but heard very good reviews about them plus wietec is a top notch brand .
The ronals have been done alot and always look good in my opinion!

Do you want handling, or to be low, like some sort of scuttling insect?
For £400 you could buy some good quality short struts and springs.
Alternatively, you could get some fairly nasty coilovers that will corrode and probably have cruddy damping.

haha scutting insect! you make me laugh
he is right though you will get a better ride with strut spring combo but i much prefer the adjustabilty of the coilovers and mine is on budget ones and i wouldnt say there harsh definetly not unbearable, plus if you do things properly by greasing the coilovers and moving adjusters every now and then they will not corrode.

i bought Weitec coilovers ...
love them and they are awsome , fairly cheap and good quality
the olny thing i dont like and wish i had got is the rears and on a circlip and you move the clip up and down for height and this needs them stripping
i am on the lowest setting and it is okish ????? but i would like more adjustability really
still think they are better than the carp cheapo ones on Ebay
-
Got the FK highsports on my car and they are utter sh!te in my opinion. Spring rates are far too hard and theres bugger all rebound damping. Only thing that made them slightly better was putting the softer rear springs on the front but you still get nodding dog syndrome and any bumpy roads mean you have to really go carefully.
-
Hmmm lots to think about then, maybe Dans recommendation over the FKs then? Not really looked into strut spring combo, whats the advantage there and what kinda price? Lol im shallow, its all about low and loud
I might be heading to a show in Spalding tommorw but probably not in mine, having some issues with it at the minute, joint on passenger side is making some rare noises, can hear me coming lol.
-
Lol im shallow, its all about low and loud
Go get a set of Hotturding coilovers then and bounce your way down the road.

Hmmm so the FKs are getting a bit of a panning it seems? Lot for me to think about it seems, appreciate all the help y'all. Anyone heading to Bugjam?
-
the fk konigsports are good coilovers if they still do them. around £450 3yrs ago
-
Ooooo they have gone up to £640!!! :embarassed:

pm'd you mate...might be of some interest to you :)

Hottuning coilovers are the ones for you then
If you're going low, as in over (or is it under?) 100mm, it might be worth trimming the bumpstops in half - that way, if you're riding on em, you won't be bouncing all over the place.
-
I've read good things about Ritter, think volksbits do them for about 250.00 think they are sister company of a bigger brand, can't remember who though. I was thinking of getting a set to drop it on it's @rse for summer then put it back to sensible ride height for winter.
-
Thats the idea really, Im thinking of slamming it on its arse for a couple of shows and then save for some better ones maybe to sensible the ride? I would stick a picture up if I knew how to do it lol.
-
Hey up dude i think you should get an air ride kit  then all you would have to do is flick a switch
-
Priced a Rayvern air kit for a mk2 golf from the man himself, was just shy of 1700.00
It'd be cool but the money could be better spent else where IMO. Unless you have money to burn. However there are a few more companies starting to do it so hopefully the price will come down a bit in future.
Me, I'll stick with coventional shock setup for time being until that Euromillions win comes through
-
LOL, Kimmy is winding me up, lol I will come leave a curly wurly on your doorstep now you only live round the corner...
Air ride is to much £££, coilovers will do for now :P
-
Not if i come and leave a curly wurly on your door step first
Air ride would be sweet as fook though :nerd:
-
Anyone know max slam size/max rim size on a Mark 2? How low can I go lol
-

Pull the springs and struts out and sit it on the floor then you won't have to buy 'coil overs'. You won't be going any where fast mind.
Mine is a bit too low and I have to be careful, I've even plotted a new route through my town to miss all the speed bumps, except those in my road I have no choice but to go over... VERY slowly.
-
How low is a bit too low buddy?
-
Not a clue how low it is, but it is LOW. Having to slow right down for speed bumps and creeping over them hoping you don't hear the horrid scraping can get annoying as my route into work has loads of speed bumps. Not to mention holding traffic up.
It may look 'cool', but feck me it's hard to live with.
-
I measured mine to be 100mm lower than a standard non-gti on some second-hand unknown-brand coilies. The splitter scrapes everywhere, but I don't care about that. I'm worried about the sump, but no knocks so far. The driveshafts aren't hitting the frame yet either.
I did however have to fold up the inner arch-lips, even tho I'm only on 185/60/14s, offset of something like 30.
I've gradually descended to this ride-height, and it's only about now (at -100mm) that I'm having to change my driving style to accommodate for sh!tty bits of road - any higher, and it's only really speed-bumps that you have to slow down for.
-
General opinion is that -40mm for max handling benifits from stock golf height. Ie how the 16v left the factory  Reason being is the driveshaft is paralelle to ground.
I enjoyed my golf when it was -90mm ish on suspension kit and that was lower than knocking off your cousin... But managed to schnapp a driveshaft, probs as result of it being at an odd angle due to excessive lowness and trying a crazy taxi move.
16in wheels are generally the biggest people consider ok without work but it all depends on et, width and suspension height will dictate whether further arch work etc will be required. However I've seen mk2's with 17s, look a tad "overwheeled", but that's just my opinion.

Its nothing to do with the driveshaft, all to do with the overall geometry of the suspension but the figure isnt far wrong lol.
-
Yeah 16s was gonna be the idea with some stretch wrapped around em, not looking to do any arch work if I can help it. Its either some Borbets or Ronals but cant decide lol. Maybe not the huge drop if its really gonna be that hard work to drive around...decisions man.

I know what i mean...

you mean wishbones not driveshafts. driveshafts at silly angles are still bad as you will chew through CVs
-
Hey up monk we should still be able to get it nice and low for you. if it too low we'll jus jack it up a bit on the coilovers  wannna be getting them soon though dude. BUG JAM soon cant fookin wait

I hear that, Im on the case tommorrow for some quotes...

Are the hot tuning ones really that bad ? I asked about them in the offers thread, but didnt really get any answers !!
Cheers

Me too, I may have to buy and set and see for myself, if I dont like them they're not difficult to swap back and bound to get a fair bit back for them. I just dont want to spend 5-600 on a top quality set, nearly half what my car's worth !!!
-
basically you get what you pay for, there isnt a cheap decent coilover unfortunately.
-
I have been told Ritter are a decent make, FK sister company and they weigh in at £293 I think when I last checked...

FK!, couldn't remember that, yeah been recommended Ritter coilover previously.

you have a mk2 golf so it's about double what your car's worth.

That depends on the mk2 golf and who's selling it...
-
i bought a set of £600 coilovers and my car cost me €600 so the suspension is worth more than the car
but i dont skrimp on my car and if it is screwed one day i just take all the good stuff off and fit it to my next Golf
glad i payed the extra money on the Weitecs and not the hottuning coilovers , the ride is ok and the handling is great
