Title: 1990 GOLF GTI SPORT LINE
Post by: ek9joey on 12 June 2009, 20:52
Hi im new to the vw sceen so dont no much but i have the oppitunity to buy this 1 lady owner golf gti sportline its got 85,000 miles from new and all paperwork to back up it has an electric roof which was replaced a few years ago and its been parked up for 2 winters but there were no know major probs before hand it will need a new bat and brakes un freeing before it will go anywhere and as you can see the paint work is super dull oh and there is no visable rust of damage to the car!

The carpet in the car is wet the lady recons it was soming to do with leaves in the gutter at the bottom of the wind screen but i dont no if this is true? if it is the roof leaking should i stay away from it?

anything else that should put me off?

The lady wants £500 for the car but i could see me spending £500 straight off so could make a dear car??

any other help will be great.

cheers

Joe

hi

with my limited mk1 knowledge (i am picking mine up tomorrow) I'd say that you have some relatively easy fixes, that is of course presuming that nothing else is wrong with it

the paintwork can be cut and polished and made to look good so no worries there... it will take work or paying a detailer but it will be worth it

you can have a look at this cabby buying guide for details

http://www.vwgolfmk1.info/main/Buyingacab.pdf (http://www.vwgolfmk1.info/main/Buyingacab.pdf)

£500 doesn't sound like a bad price for the age and mileage.. but for that price you are never going to get a minter and you will have to pay money out to get it into anything like good shape... maybe not another £500 though

the scuttle panel (under the windscreen) can block up with leaves and debris, there is a little tube under there which can clog easily... easy enough to clean out though. suggest getting the seller to pour a watering can full of water over the seals to check for leaks.

if its been standing for a long time check the quality of the tyres

i am sure the others will be along shortly to give more insights

500quid is an absolute bargain mate, if you look at any other cabio's for sale they will have double the mileage and around 10owners witout most the history.

If its got one lady owner you know it isnt going to be trashed about. Check for rust inside the filler neck, like someone has already said the gutters can get blocked with leaves and water leaks into the footwells. Brakes were always bad on a mk1, and because its red it will fade like crazy! You may have to spend abit of money on top, probably won't as much as 500, but even if it is, its still a bargain!

The interior is worth 500 all day long, so buy it and break it.

Good luck with the sale, not a bad little proffit if you get the asking price considering it now needs a hood (would like to think your going to give the little old lady owner a drink)

ps. keep the car and restore it as you intended... or flog it to me so I can
