Definitely outside of the car? and is it a rattle..or a knocking noise?  if it's suspension/steering related then you might feel the problem as well as hear it..It could be the old heatshield problem but difficult to say without more info..

I have a feeling it is the heatshield issue! you need to get under the car and see if any have movement! and bin or refix if they have

when do you get the rattle??? taking a corner?? going over a bump?? going over a bumpy road or just randomly coming?

also, does your car pull to any side or is it lighter to turn to any side?

I got the same problem...

Started a few days ago i thought the exhaust was banging against the body work but its not..

There are no loose heat sheilds and noting in the boot banging around.

Its driving me nuts...

It sounds like somethings loose and hitting metal. I thought someone put marbles or something in the back box...

Check your rear top mounts, they can let go and start banging etc.

i had a similar problem but mine was the brake hose had come loose where its attached to the front strut and its held on by a bolt so that may be worth looking at i tightened mine up and it stopped

I found my rattle

i pulled up at m8's and reversed into spot but the rear wheels locked...

took a look and the rear caliper which was hanging on by 1 bolt and the sheild had been well and trully totaled..

Jacked it up took the wheel nut cover of and found out it only had 3 out of 5 nuts....

All the other wheels only had 4 and on the other front 2 of these were hand tight....gulp

Only bought the car 8 days ago so it wasn't me...

when i bought the car id noticed it had new pads. Once id got the caliper of the dodgy wheel the brake pads crumbled the whole face of them had chunks missing and big scrathes all over them..

It seems obvious to me that who ever done the breaks was a complete d i c k and didnt put all the nuts back on the wheels or the breaks so i just spent all day taking the wheels of and checking every last detail..

Put them back togeater and now all is well.............for now at least

Bloody hell you were lucky not to have had an accident over those 8 days of ownership. Id be tempted to give the seller a damn good ear blasting, what a prick!

Thats nothing m8 you should see the botch up on the exhaust back box its lucky it didnt fall of on the motor way it just so happens it managed to stay on by a few spot welds until i realised it..
Thing is i didnt realise it till today when i was checking the brakes.

Getting back to the wheels and brakes tho i could have been killed i had to go to a garage to get 3 of the nuts of because they were to tight and you know what that means.

To tight and not enought wheels nuts means your dead in my book im lucky im not hanging from a tree on fire coz if a wheel had come of last night when i went for a spin around tight bumpy lanes with a m8 and 2 birds in the motor id be in about 100 peices and melted to the tarmac by now..
