So my new GTi only has nearly 8k on the clock and since ive bought it, the service in 8500 miles or x amount of days has been coming up. Yesterday it said "service now" which I assume has counted down 1 year from the last service (which it does tally up in the service book).
What to do?
The car has only ever had an oil / filter change at 5200 miles (a year ago), there was a ABS fault October 2008 which lead to the system being bled and a part changed, IE brake fluid change done.
So previous owner only did 2000 miles ish since last years oil / filter change.
Do I:
Reset the counter and forget about it
or
Get an oil / filter change (last one was done by an indy dealer)
Anything else worth getting done? fuel filters? pollen filters? the car has only ever had oil / filter change once in 3 years (8K miles)
Thanks

Spoke to my Local VW dealer just, they recommend either of the following:
1 Year Service:
Oil Change
Oil Filter
Pollen Filter
£135 (was £172.98, knocked him down)
or
Long Life Service
Same as above just with longlife oil
£193
Recon either is expensive, will go for 1 year service routine as I only do short distances.
What cost should I expect to pay for oil change and oil / pollen filter change?
-
I would do the LL service and try to knock him down a little.
Any cheaper if you provide your own LL oil?
-
How much do you recon is a good price?
I would have thought staying on the 1 year / 10K service was better as my trip to work is only 7 miles ish, ie short runs?
-
Does the longlife oil really cost £60 more? I doubt it. Sound's like the Longlife service is a bit of a fiddle to me. I'd rather have it serviced every 12 months than pay £60 for the privilige of getting the service counter reset for longer.

Well its booked in local VW next week for T and D service.
Though I'm shopping around for cheaper rate and after reading a few threads in here getting LongLife Oil in it.
If not im sure I can knock VW down as all I said after saying the T&D is for me and I will ring them back he said I will do it for £135. Didnt have to push so recon I should get it with LL oil for £140 ish.
I recon I could do the service myself if I had a ramp and a little rubber stamp for the service booklet, thats what you pay for IMO lol.
-
My recent 1yr service (I think they call it intermediate) was only £115 incl VAT, without any negotiation!
-
Was that using LL oil??
OP - see how much LL oil costs, and then ask VW how much they would do the service for if you supply your own oil. If it is more cost effective to buy the oil yourself, do it that way!
-
Was that with LL oil ED30DSG?
Also do you lot recon its worth getting the spark plugs changed? it low mileage but plenty of start / stops, short journeys?
-
2nd year service should include a brake fluid change.
You are very unlikely to get the LL oil from a dealer for only £5 more but good luck
Go to Costco and see if you can buy it there (Castrol Edge 5w 30). They used to do 3 litre packs for about £11.50. The GTI takes 4.5 litres of oil.
Have you read this thread:

Good advice, don't skimp on servicing

Cheers Cass,
Yes I read that thread which convinced me to go with LL oil and keep the car on T&D servicing. The car did have an ABS fault fixed under warranty which did state a system bleed, but better to be safe than sorry so I recon I should get the following done:
Oil Change (new LL oil)
New Oil Filter
New Pollen Filter
Brake Fluid change
New Spark Plugs

Mine is cooming up to 66,000 & service is due soon.I'm going to a local indi garage & i will be getting genuine parts my self. What do i need /would you recomend please ?.Water pump & cam belt etc have been done just before i picked it up(part of the deal).
-
Phoned a couple up and they recommend I have the 2nd year / 20K interval service. Which in the manual on top of oil change etc is they checking;
Battery
Tyres, tread and pressures
Brakes
Now those were all checked when it went in for warranty work 2 weeks ago, even got a printed "health check" sheet to say so.
So Just worth having the oil / filter service with added bits.
Cheapest so far for 2 year / 20K (using LL Oil) with brake fluid and pollen filter change is £187, the rest quote £210 - £230
-
What a pain in the rear all this service lark is, booked it in for the following:
2 Year / 20K service
Oil Filter Change
Oil Change (using 504 LL Oil)
Pollen Filter Change
Brake Fluid Change
Kept on T&D Service regime
Total £187 (1.5 Hours Work) Originally quoted around £230
They wanted £80 ish for spark plugs, which I can get done next year or at a later date. Probably doesnt need air filter at such low miles, but might replace OEM panel with an aftermarket one. Fuel filter doesnt need doing. Tried to get me to have an aircon service as well but not sure on that (extra £25).
Hope this helps anyone with service queries.

Sorry, just noticed this question.... I checked the VW invoice and it says platinum oil, which I assume is std for T&D servicing.
-
I have no idea why they want to charge you more for longlife oil as ALL Mk5's take longlife oil REGARDLESS of whether they're on T&D or LL servicing.
In fact, I was told the other week by one a very good specialist that VW have officially discontinued all the other oils and now say all vehicles should now be using 504.00/507.00 spec oil.
