just read somewhere
that the late mk3 1.6GL golf has 16v? (mine being 97')
is this correct:)
cause i know my GL left the factory with around 101bhp but wasnt sure about if it was 8v or 16v
can someone answer this for me?
-
Boneybradley's thread has ALL model info!
-
fairly new to this :) still finding my way round, would you kindly link me:)
-
Its in the sticky section above!
-
if your car has 101bhp then it will be the 16v
-
okay thanks mate:)
-
could you take a pic of your engine, i'm interested in what it looks like.
-
From memory all mk3 1.6's were 8v, it was only the mk4 that got the 16v.
-
Surprisingly there was, never seen the engine hence why I would like to see it
-
but i read that the late mk3s were 16v
GTiAdam - yes a will mate:) give me a sec
-
do you just use photobucket and the html code to show pictures on here?
-
yep. and the copy and paste the img section

Heres some pictures Adam

Sweet mate looks like a baby abf! quite a rare car you got really as only a few were run out before the mk4 came out!
Pete
-
Thats an 8v with a crossflow head.
-
how many of these are about then?
so its deffo not a 16v?
and whats the crossflow head make a difference cause i have no clue and am trying to learn:)

Standard and early 8v engines had the manifolds on the back of the engine, for the usa market and later on over here they used a crossflow engine with the inlet manifold on the front of the engine, it is a better design to be honest, it is still only an 8v.
-
I have never seen one so can't tell from your pic but the 1.6 gl with 100bhp was definately 16v! They used the 1.6 16v engine in the very last of the mk3s before using it in the mk4!
Pete
-
Yup, still only a 8V & 1.6!....and i thought the 2.0 8V was lethargic.
-
16valve for emission purposes rather than performance then.
-
Polo 1.4 16v
(http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p51/jmfangio5/BTtvdigBWkKGrHgoH-DEjlLlzuWBKJ7jwIk.jpg)
Golf / Bora 1.6 16v

-
well i know its a 1.6GL (not CL)
erm i know the CL has 75bhp, and the GL has 101bhp (check it up on parkers)
its just the valve side of things im not sure about
so im pretty certain ive got a 1.6GL with 101bhp just yeahh
-
Whats the engine code? It should be on the tag in the boot or in the service booklet.
-
The white sticker on the cam cover will also have the engine number on it.

AFT mate:)
-
The 1.6 16v mk4 is 105bhp.
-
mk3: 1.6 1595 cc 4cyl Petrol 100 PS (99 hp/74 kW) @5800 rpm 140 N·m (103 lb·ft) @3500 rpm AFT/AKS 11.2 188 km/h (117 mph)
mk4: 1.6 AUS / AZD / ATN / BCB I4 DOHC 16V 1.6 L (1598 cc, 98 cu in) 105 PS (104 hp/77 kW) @ 5,700 rpm 148 N·m (109 lb·ft) @ 4,500 rpm
-
so this means its 8v? or 16v:)
toby = very confused:)

Its an 8v as I said earlier.
-
I'm guessing it is a SOHC 16V engine then.... its definitely 16v
-
with 101bhp?:)
opps no 99
okie dokey thanks waynee

No worries happy to help wherever I can.
-
It's a 16v unless what i'm reading is wrong?
-
what deffo?
the eng code is deffoo AFT!
-
that engine is 16v with 99bhp
-
The AFT engine was 16v! It's all up in BBs website to if you wanna check! I guess I was wrong about the engine being used in the mk4 but I am certain if what you have said about you bhp and engine code that your car is 16v!
-
If you look at the pictures you can tell its obviously a 16valve engine.
the 1.6 8 valve only produces 75ishbhp, and is exactly the same as the 1.4 engine; and them pictures look nothink like that, it is obviously not 8V.
later on they braught out the 16v version, which by the pics you can clearly see this is, it produced around 100 bhp. however there are not many of these cars around, i have only ever seen one for sale, im not sure if its the same that went into the mk4, but it wont be far off it.
-
Over all its quite a rare car.
-
okay thanks guys:)
-
If you all look at the photo you can see it is an 8v, I cannot see it is a 16v as if you look again at the rocker cover you will see only one cam.
-
Some of you lot speak a lot of shyte.
It's a 1.6 8V crossflow motor.
See any similarities to this:
That's my 2.0 crossflow 8V
It is NOT a 16V motor.
Unfortunately, as it's in a Golf3 the only option is to scrap it when something goes wrong.
-
well from what ive been told and read
it is a 16v
look up the eng code AFT!
it is indeed 16v i might take it to a vw specialist to see:)
cause from what im told this is quite a rare car, so its hard to tell
but the pull of this car does not feel like 75bhp (which would be 8v) at all
the car has 101bhp
-
You especially speak a lot of shyte.
It's an 8V, you numpty.
-
The big clue is the rocker cover and only one cam.
-
It looks like an 8v to me.

yup keep on arguing against the guys that have a lifetime of knowledge!
-
A lifetime of knowledge?
Are you lot really that old?
-
i dont mean it to look like im arguing :)
cause im not!
erm its just different people say different things
so its like:S i dont know whats going on
-
Just face it, ur cars just a plain old 8v  tbh wats the big deal the cars still a 1.6 at the end of the day
-
8V.
Source: I work with these engine codes and crap everyday.
-
(http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o85/beyondsuffering/11062009050.jpg)
that is most defantly 8v anyone who has been trying to say it's a 16v needs a large slap and from now on shall only be allowed to have engines containg upto 8 valves for insulting 16 valveyness
an examplel of 16valveyness
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/dannyp1595/16v%20stuff/ABFengine.jpg)

I'm guessing somebody (Toby) has probably been on Edition 38 and read my posts regarding the very same engine..
It kicked off a bit of a debate over on that forum too lol
Don't see how it matters though cus the other day you were telling everybody it's your mums car ?
-
Who cares how many valves it's got for gods sake. It's still a slow engine how ever you look at it.
-

Is it, it is only 15bhp down on an 8v GTI
-
Fair doos.
you can have a SOHC and 16 valves btw.

The only car I ever knew with that set up was the Triumph Dolomite Sprint, I could be wrong however.
-
yeah it is only 15 down from the 8v GTi
it doesnt really matter to be fair. i just wanted to know:)
and i know its a slow engine.
-

Well no but power is not everything, I had an 8v Gti and found it quick enough for the driving I did plus good on fuel.
-
Honda like doing a SOHC 16v engines (VTEC sh!te), BMW Minis, Cooper and One have 16v SOHC.
Weird having one cam for 16valves, cam belt snaps any your fucked.
-

answering someones question!
No of course not, excuse me if that came across wrong. I'm just saying that 8v GTI (which i own) is hardly what you'd call the greatest engine choice when you consider the power to weight ratio on what was supposed to be a 'hot hatch'.
