Just a quick question, will the rear axle from a mk3 gti fit on a Mk2? Just a curiosity thing at the moment as i have been looking at the gtd mk2's but also a mk2 project aswell that will receive alot of parts from a mk3 gt1 16v, ie engine etc and just wondered if the rear axle would swap over or even the stub axles so i can transfer the disc breaks to the diesl along with some other gti bits like the gbox an other running gear bits from a gti.

Oakey Doke (or similar) on here was going to do it on his ABF conversion, not sure if he did or not.
Having worked on both you need to bear in mind that the brake compensator is involved with the rear beam, so you might be in for rather more work than you think.
-
The break compensator, is that the same as a load sensing valve? if so it should be would it be possible to do away with it?, basically my main concern is the physical fitting of it, ie mounting.
-
The load sensing valve is incorporated in the rear hydraulic circuits on Mk 2 GTi Golf’s and other models to prevent the rear wheels locking up in advance of the front wheels, so if you have a heavy load in the boot more braking efficiency will go to the rear wheels, and yes you will need it as it is an MOT failure without it.

No what i meant was swap from the mk2 the the mk3 axle if the mk3 axle will bolt straight on and if this is the problem with fitting a mk 3 axle to a mk2.
The problem i have is i am still in the planning phase of 2 projects and just trying to get as much info before i go buying cars, and also got to get rid of my scooby to provide funding, been looking at many different projects involing a mk and conversions and now planning on the 2.0l 16v as my one of choice with a 1.6 gtd as a dailey drive with some choice mods.
But until i get the cars and get my hands on i am relying on you guys on here for some advice with what will fit.
The reason for doing the swap would be to put discs on to the GTD instead of drums and as i am planning on buying a complete mk3 gti 16v to do the conversion on my intended project car i wondered if the axle from that would bolt straight up on to either of the cars, probabley the one that will be getting the 2.0l engine.
I have just read a post about mk3 dash into mk2 which looks quite straight forward so that will probabley go aswell.

It's quite a different set up, positioning-wise and as I haven't tried fitting one I can't comment too extensively on the subject, but I suspect you'd be able to sort it with a little creative bracketeering.
Of course, the other option is to go proper bias-valve inside the car, although that does need you to re-wire the whole braking circuit....

So probabley not the easyest route to go for putting discs on the GTD, will probabley just get a rear axle from a mk2 gti, go for the easy option me think.
However i am not worried about re wiring the braking circuit , just don't fancy having to mess about trying to get the thing to fit, just for rear discs on a GTD would just go the easy route as i said.

Have a look around on Club GTi, theres a thread all about rear axles, widths, different Mk3 fittings etc etc on there.

I'm 99% sure it'll bolt on, and if it bolts on use the MK3 beam mounting brackets and thats the bias valve issue solved as well, since its the beam bracket the bias valve is bolted to. just need to run new brake lines to it as the non-bias equipped mk2s have brake lines routed differently

Excellant, looks like thats a plan then, someone said something about the track being wider on the mk3, anyone know by how much, like the idea of it being a bit fatter!!!
As for the brake line, that wont be a problem to make, get all the stuff from work.

The axles are the same dimensions excluding hubs as the Mk3 rears are thicker.
GTi to GTI with the rear arb, el sameo'!
