Im looking at replacing my exhaust next week, but need some feedback on viable options, (89 16v small bumper) I want a system that will bolt to the O/E manifold, and will closely resemble the original system, with twin tail pipes, quality must be good, and price not really an issue, and any pics would be appreciated
Thanks

Hi Thom,
In the end I believe Super Sprint to be the best fit these days. For pics i believe Darn PB runs one of those systems and imo looks rather good. I can't give advise for small bumper owners as i have never owned one sorry.
I will say tho as a milltek person, if i had to choose tommoro i really think i would stay standard, for numerous reasons.

Darn PB is running jetex (unless he's changed it).
PS... This thread will probably get locked as its been covered many times.

Ive got a supersprint one on mine, not sure how old it is tho.
For small bumpers its ok - sticks out a little way but the tip looks good when polished.
with big bumpers the tail pipe is pretty much flush with the bumper.
heres a crap pig with big bumpers,

Mine is a Jetex one, but I am having problems with it.........again. The baffles in the rear box have gone so I am after a new one.
The Jetex is a nice exhaust and good quality, but it weighs a bloody ton and this causes the problems with fitting, rattling and banging. Saying that though, it was meant for a 16v, and my car is a G60.

You could always look in the yellow pages or do a google search for a local company who make you a stainless system to meet your requirements. Probalbly would not cost much more than a off the shelf system and you get exctly what you want.
-
For fit, piece of mind and tone I would say Longlife all day long.
-
I have a magnex full stainless system with two silencer boxes on it fully poly bushed. Not much louder than stock at idle, too old for that crap. Just bassy and really frees it up past 4k
Twin tailpipe design similar to OE, no photo's as I'm crap.
But not much different from Tubbs piccy

Hmmmm that's interesting, Though I would need my tailpipes to exit the rear panel at an angle, as in this pic

Ill give it a few more days to see if anything else comes up, Its a shame that Janspeed no longer do exhaust for the Mk2, as there stuff was of excellent quality

I agree, had one on my last mk2, was a sweet fit, but one word of advice if they ask you what sound you want dont got for the loud "sport" as it is too loud, that was my mistake!

Have you thought about a genuine system? I think the "longlife" is stainless, not saying they still make it though

Longlife are stainless custom so should still make them.

Sorry, i meant VW make/made an exhaust that was a longlife option or something like that, but it was stainless. I don't mean the custom people
-
Ah right, sorry, i would imagine that they dont have them anymore, i am sure i have seen this type of post before where someone wanted a standard look exhaust.

Ah, that confused me, I tried Googling longlife, and came up with nothing of any significance, will try VW in the morning to see if they're still available, would be great to stay O/E...

These are the custom people have a look, it says about design and being able to get close to O.E styles.
-
They have existed:

Guess we'll find out tomorrow if they still do :undecided:

anyone found out about the longlife yet? does it still exist?

OK, so I phoned the dealer today, no wonder they've got some left! they want an arm and a leg, not to mention a pound of flesh as well!! it would have come to just under £600 with the vat! and not entirely of stainless steel, had it all been stainless, I probably would have bit the bullet, and got the lot...
So, the hunt is still on, Ive got a few other contacts to try, and possibly getting a system made up.... nothings easy is it....

Down pipe back from longlife cost me £300, and they will probabley be able to do you a tail pipe design like the O.E one, give em a call you never know.
-
Well, I bit the bullet and went for a Jetex system, supplied by Venom motorsport, service and delivery were excellent, with the system being delivered the next day, with no problems, and for just over £300... fitting was a doddle, everything except sealer was supplied, and was all in place, and running with 1/2 an hour of getting it out the box, I would have prefered the tail pipers to have come out at a slight angle, to replicate the original 16V system, but I'm now getting used to the straight look of the pipes, best of all is the sound though, a quiet, but crisp note under normal driving, giving way to a healthy roar when running up to full chat, the winge that I have is that the standard of welding on the hidden parts of the system is not the very best, the wire speed on the MIG welder could have been turned down a couple of clicks to produce a "flatter" weld,, though it has to be said that I am one of the fussiest when it comes to other peoples workmanship, it really is, just me.. :lipsrsealed:
The pipe naturally sits a little off centre, and protrudes approx 4inches proud of the rear panel, so not too chavy! all brackets on the new system were lined up with the original hangers on the body, rear pipe was held straight and all clamps tightened, it was a first time fit, with no banging or crashing while going over speed bumps!! so yeah, really pleased with the system, and would give it a 8/!0 with only the welding holding it back

How did you get on with the reducer for the downpipe? I find it pushes the exhaust back just a little too far to line up properly over the rear beam :undecided:

I had no issues with the downpipe, the old system on my car was a genuine VW item, replaced by the dealer in 1998, service history backs this up, the reducer was fitted up to the "Tide" mark of the old system.. the rest fell into place, and plenty of clearance over the beam, I forgot to say in my last post, that I opened up all the female joints a few thou, with a joint expander, just as a matter of course...

I wish mine had fitted like that. Had to take the car into a fabricator to adjust the whole system at great expense. A couple of weeks later, the baffles in the rear silencer let go so had to get another back box. Luckily, I have just won one on the bay. So back again to Mike Stokes to get that one modified to fit the rest of the system. It just never ends!
-
How on earth did yours fit so easily! ive had no end of trouble with mine and it still hits on the rear beam

I've sorted my jetex banging issue - I've added a heavy-duty cable tie to each hanger, tightened just enough to still allow the exhaust to "bounce" on the rubber (helping to absorb the reverb noise), but the cable ties stop it bouncing beyond a certain point. A month later and all the cable ties are still intact and the banging has completely stopped.
-
mine fits perfectly too!
