Title: Odd MFA function control?
Post by: jezza16v on 06 June 2009, 21:24
Hi, having driven another mk2 gti today I realise that my MFA stalk is not working properly. All the functions work OK but to scroll them you have to push the sliding switch to 0, the button on the end does nothing at all and I know now this is supposed to scroll through the functions? I know there's a clip connector in the column but iirc this can only go together one way? Any ideas where the problem might be? Thanks J

right should deffo have that kind of switch on it then! my guess is the pins/wire snapped/came adrift in the past and a po put them back in the wrong order!  iirc the wire colours both sides if the mfa stalk plug match so it should just be a case of following them back as far as you can to check they all match :)

WTF is going on here then!

Wire colours are not the same, do you think a pre 89 MFA stalk has been botched in?

I thought I'd be clever and pull my son's '89 apart..........bu**er.........the wiring has different colours to my '91 job...... :undecided:

Can anyone help me match the wires in the first pic correctly?  Thanks. J

If it helps there are only 24 possible combinations.

Thanks, that'll be 4 factorial.......We have a bright spark on here.
I'll try all of those and see which makes it go BANG!

ok! looking at diagrams and what you said, I recon you need to swap the red/white and yelow/red over :)

edit: hmm, maybe not, just had a look at pre/post diagrams after I see the pre-90 one on your pic is different colours. Not so easy, I think it needs to be:
blue - brown/white
white - red/white
red - blue/yellow
black - red/yellow

My larger worry is why is there a mix of pre/post 90 here, have the stalks been bodged as weell, where is the hazard switch? any other nasty lookign wiring underneath the cowling to stalks?

Could just be he has swapped a pre-90 mfa button end onto a post-90 stalk, you can actually pop the tips off them

Hazard switch on the 91 is on the top of the column, on the '89 its on the dash.

Just dropped more of the dash to have a look and its surprisingly neat & tidy under there.

BTW the stalk on th 89 is snapped and botched with insulating tape, there's plenty on egay but mostly for post 90, pre 90 are a bit pricey. Will the later one fit the earlier one with a fiddle on the connector of course?  J

the actual stalk where it fits to column is completly different, so you have to get the right one! thats why I was worried about bodging under the cowling. looks like they have just swapped a pre-90 mfa end onto a 90spec stalk :)

OK, thanks, I'll go and rewire as your advice and see what happens.
