Hi, this may seem like a bit of stupid question :embarassed:
I'm trying to solve popping exhaust on my 8v digi, used RJs digi tune up guide to set up the engine but it still does it when going from say 4 to 2. So now I've moved on renewing vaccum hoses. Should the one way valve thats connected to inlet manifold, suck air in through the little hole in the white cap?
cheers
Nik

if you mean the larger blanked off connection on the 1 way valve, no it should be completly sealed :)

Cheers RJ, I've managed to upload the obligatory pic

The pic shows the hole in the white/yellow plastic cap. I didn't want to block it off and test the car just in case it would effect braking.

yeah that hole needs blocking!

Cool. Wrapped some gaffer tape around it as botch job and plugged the hole. But now when i start it the car idles at 3k! Completely closed the idle screw and I opened the co mixture right out to see if it made any difference, but nothing happened. When I unplugged the blue temp sender the idle settled at about 2k. Do i need to reset the timing or was that hole put there to hide a bigger fault?
-
you have cured an air leak so the idle/co will need resetting :)
make sure there arnt any more before you do though ;)

Managed to solve the fast idle problem. Turned out to be the throttle cable had twisted when I moved it so I could tape up the air leak, so the throttle wasn't closing properly! Feel like a right plonker!
Anyway reset everything and took it on a test run....still popping slightly when changing from 3 to 2. So I guess I'm looking for another air leak!

if you have a bad zaust leak it can cause this :)

Could be, the section to the manifold is old and tired, probably original parts and I can't find any other air leaks. Gonna stick in a new GSF blue temp sender just to see if that sorts it, if it does its worth the effort trying to order a proper one from VW Leeds. Maybe they'll answer the phone this time

go to vw for the sensor, the pattern ones arnt very good :)
