Title: 2nd Gear crunch - knackered synchro??
Post by: [steve] on 05 June 2009, 10:21
My Golf seems to crunch when changing to 2nd too quickly, if you give it a second or two after dropping out of 1st before putting it in 2nd, it is fine...

Is it just the synchro mesh and is it a big job to fix. Also, does it have any long term impact on anything (gearbox etc).

Cheers.

Steve.

THis is very common on MKII's. It's a sign the syncro on 2nd is badly worn. Does it get better once the gearbox has warmed up?

Try changing the gearbox oil (Search on here for the best tuse as I can't remember off hand) as this often improves it immensley.

if the bushes are worn this will make things worse as well

unless you want to shell out £500 for a box refurb id get used to it!

Cheers guys, will check the gear oil tonight.

It does seem better when the box is warm... its only a little crunch at the mo too, so not too bad
