from your discription maybe the auxillary belt possibly, condensation can sit on it, or too loose!
-
is it a problem?. as im no mechanic myself, so not even sure what that is, but hopefully there aint nothing to be worried about... thanks
-
do you have warrenty? just take it back and ask them to look at it

Sounds like the fan belt to me. Shouldn't think it'll do any harm as long as it stops soon after starting.
It will only get worse, though, if it is loose or worn. If you bought the car from a garage, I'm sure they will tighten it up. Not usually a tricky job to do. Done it on a few cars, but not mine.

yeah it goes after a few mins.. no warrenty unfortunately and as for the garage doing it, i doubt it as its from a place called available car.com in derby :( .. i think it willl be ok from what you've said so far.. thx guys :)

A garage should only charge half hours labour although it wont even take that that long!

One thing to note is that modern VW's have an automatic tensioner. I found this out when I had to buy a new one for my mk4 GTI @ £80. So if it is a tensioning issue it won't be as simple as loosening a couple of bolts and retensioning...
Don't you just love modern cars

ahh ffs, ive wanted a gti since i was a kid and the mk1 came out.. i hope its not gona turn into a nightmare. .lol.
35 in two weeks so its took some years to get one...:):):)... gota love the mk5 gti...

Best bet is just take it to a good garage (not necessarily a main dealer) and see what they say.

^^
What he said.
Out of interest, if you switch the AC on / off does it change the pitch of the noise or anything? When I had a problem with my tensioner I found that switching the AC on or off changed the pitch slightly. If it does then at least you know it something to do with that belt and its unlikely to be a majorly serious problem. If it doesn't change then it doesn't really tell you anything .

well theres no differance when i put the air con on, but ive had the bonet up and its defo coming from the drivers side of the engine...
