I know they say the build quality of the golfs seems to go down hill the newer they get, and how true!
I have had a total of 8 MK3 golfs now, and one MK4 ... I drove a 1.8L K reg MK3 golf with 200K miles+ on the clock and it just never let me down, but my MK4 TDI 115 i have had for about 4 months now and its nothing but problems, with 90k on the clock
Its burst a coolent pipe, goes into limp mode when on the motor way, never starts very well (not as good as my MK3 TDI) Tappets rattle like mad when cold (dispite a VW Service!) the electric heated seats failed, and today... the clutch peddle actually broke! the weld snapped clean off and i was left with no clutch, and when trying to fix it.. was really quite shocked at the design faults :undecided:
Still im not putting them down as much as it may sound, but its such a shock as my MK3 golfs have little issues due to age etc.. but nothing that has renderd my car unusable.
I love the drive quality, style and everything else about the MK4... but is this the price we pay for some fancy blue dials and a sleeker look?
:undecided:

limp mode coudl be caused by a boost leak, faulty N75 valve or worse case scenario - your turbo is goosed
not starting well could be faulty coolant temp sensor or glow plugs
its a diesel and because its a high pressure system it will sound tappety on startup
fancy blue dials FTW

I know most of the things are simple fixes..
I did have the vag-com reading from the limp mode, i forget what it is but valves and turbos are mentioned when i googled it.
coolent temp sensor does show up as intermitant fault too... could that be why it doesnt like to fire up?
If i sort this broken clutch out i might fall back in love, who knows

Your fall in love with it.......then something else breaks :lipsrsealed:

So far had about 5 or 6 mk4's and only ever had problems with the V6 4motion the diesels have never missed a beat(touch wood)

I've had more problems with this car in one year than what I've had with 4 other cars over 5 years :lipsrsealed:
